I worked at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time

    Pros

    - Some areas are very innovative and looking at cutting edge tools
    - Some interesting and smart people work there. I find either very technology driven (IT) or energy passionate. Rare to find someone in between
    - Looking ahead to evolution of energy industry and how pg&e should evolve

    Cons

    - Highly political environment, almost toxic (depending where you work)
    - A lot of admin people that don't add value to operations. Often I wonder why another group exists that does the same job than another group I was working with
    - Slow to make decisions and in its way of operating. Will require multiple approvals before going forward with an idea
    - PG&E loves MBAs. Some of them think they are managers already or want to impose their ideas on others that have been working in the industry for years
    - Middle management often don't help you progress. I found that some are so picky that demand things are done their way or are never satisfied. Managers need to be more people oriented and enablers for employees.

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric part-time

    Pros

Good pay compared to other companies for working in a call center

    Cons

I got hired in 2009 when call center reps started out making 25 an hour... when i left the call center i was making 33... that was before the contract changed. Now they start reps out at like 18 or 19 an hour and you progress to the higher wages once you complete a few years of service... which is tough because they start out all reps as part time when they are hired on.

    You are micro managed

You are expected to work taking calls your whole shift barley enough time alotted for bathroom breaks in the metrics they expect

No time off the phones ever... never any projects, special assignments given. You don't even have time for casual conversations with other employees to get to know your co workers because your always taking calls

They don't treat people like people and value there employees your treated like a number there and all they care about is your metrics like how much time you spend off the phones doing after call work, going to the restroom

Can't have your cell phone out and visible.. your can't even charge ur phone on ur desk

They make people scared to speak up about injuries like carpal tunnel and write people up for reporting injuries

    Advice to Management

    Too many to say here

    Pros

Most pros and cons depends on where you are and which organization you belong to...

    - Employee Resource Groups
    - decent benefits with pension, 3 week vacation to start, matching 401k, education tuition reimbursement
    - employees with great knowledge and had been with the company for a long time
    - scholarships and donations to nonprofits and company matches it
    - wellness center offers classes free to employees

    Cons

    - very traditional and relationship based; not what you know but who you know, which can impact your promotion/merit increase
    - Even if you do a great job but your direct supervisor is not a great advocate of you, mid-upper management won't know you/recognize your contributions
    - constantly being reorg with new leadership
    - work-life balance can be a challenge
    - currently low morale and low engagement as the message had been consistently about affordability and downsizing

I worked at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Competitive pay, good benefits, and a good location in the city. Retirement benefits give people an incentive to stay a long time.

    Cons

Lots of issues with the leadership team, and there is very little accountability. They claim to have a speak up culture, but issues are just swept under the rug. Opportunities for advancement are all about who you know. The environment that has been created is very political and toxic.

    Advice to Management

Listen to feedback and survey results. Also hire people in leadership positions that actually have experience instead of placing individuals with no experience in critical roles in the organization.

I worked at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time

    Pros

Great benefits package. Great location, right at downtown near BART and other restaurants.

    Cons

The management is firing American workers and flying people from India to take their jobs. The worst part of it is that they have to train their replacements; otherwise, they have to walk out without a severance package. They are doing this in stages so it does not trigger the interest of the media. They call this action Reorganization in order to mask what they are really doing. If you want to play politics, they may let you stay there. However, if you're there just to do your job as a professional, good luck.

    Advice to Management

Value your employees and recognize them for the job well done, especially those who take pride on the work they do. Remember the golden rule: do to others what you want to be done to you. Also, they way you treat others is the way you ought to be treated. The world goes around.

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Benefits, work-life balance, interesting work, and good people (that is changing)

    Cons

Benefits are being "rearranged", work life balance is questionable and leadership in some departments are the result of cronyism not ability. There is a lot of talk about open and honest communication, but one is punished for doing so in may departments.

    Advice to Management

Upper management appears to be beyond help at the moment and not open to advice.

    Pros

Very hard-working employees, great benefits, lots of opportunities for growth within the company.

    Cons

No work-life balance and poor leadership. The Affordability measures and elimination of jobs impacted employees who were left with jobs, creating a low moral and poor work environment.

    Advice to Management

Be more transparent. Listen to your employees.

    Pros

Great place to start a carrer, good benefits,

    Cons

Truly shaneful beaucracy, heavy top down leadership, MANY incompetent middle managers, directors, and high level officers. Exxessive metrics that are essentially in-comprehensible. Very reactive to reliabilty problems AFTER major outage due to obsolete equipment.

    Advice to Management

Think more of the employees who do the real work and improving service realibilty to customers, and stop promoting yourselves for execssvely high pay. .

I worked at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

-Deep expertise within teams. It's not uncommon to meet people who have been there 20+ years. They have both the context and the know-how of why things are done the way they are.
-Vast opportunities to move around and learn the entire business. Moving around departments is highly encouraged.
-Benefits. PG&E is a natural monopoly and has the resources to be generous with their employees.
-Incredible sense of teamwork. Not only within your team but across departments. There's an overwhelming sense that individual contributors help each other succeed.
-Incredible sense of giving back to the community. Multiple opportunities to volunteer, fund raise and just provide help through community services. If you want a company that walks the talk about giving back, PG&E has your back and will support your cause.

    Cons

Terrible leadership at the department level. Managers believe they're doing amazing work but are just riding the coattails of a natural monopoly. What do you do when you have no fear of losing to a competitor? What happens when there's little incentive to be creative? These individuals speak about "cutting edge" ideas and "new ways of thinking" but are fearful of actually letting go of the past.

    Advice to Management

To the Senior Leadership: As you begin to implement the affordability initiative, take into account weeding out ingrained leadership who have been there 10+ years. There's a reason why young professionals AND external hires quickly leave; it's your managers at the department level who choke the life out of new hires.

I worked at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Great Benefits
    Nice downtown location
    Nice company vision, good culture
Wonderful employees at Individual Contributer level

    Cons

Bad management - focus up, not down
Horrible review system (calibration)- all managers get in a room and either praise or criticize their employees without the employees present. Those unfortunate to be in the criticize category are shamed in front of all other managers and lose any opportunities while those praised are really due to subjectivity but in some cases are genuinely great employees.
Managers are more than willing to throw their employees under the bus.
They have a phony hiring system where most jobs are posted with an individual in mind but HR makes the hiring manager interview 3 candidates for HR auditing purposes so you go to an interview that is really a big waste of your time. They also have a poor recruiting organization that is not good at negotiation. I was a hiring manager so I am saying this from experience.
Also, you tend to get locked in an organization or role without much opportunity to move around.

    Advice to Management

The culture of management upper focus is too strong to offer any advice. They will continue to proceed with a culture of lip service to their employees while they continue to throw them under the bus. Ironically, I had a hard time leaving because I did really like the other my peers and my team of Ind Contributers, friendships I made and the benefits but Management made it really hard to continue there any longer.
