I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

There are interesting projects and problems to solve depending on the group you are in and on your manager.
There is a culture of learning and there are so many subject matter experts that are willing to share their time and experience!
My favorite part of my job is the fact that I'm always learning about markets, the industry and about new technologies.
PG&E allows and supports internal transfers to different departments so it feels like different jobs (although understandably, it's frowned upon if you move before a year in your group).

    Cons

Trying to be flatter, but generally a hierarchical organization.

    Advice to Management

Be transparent in your decision making - and develop an implementation plan over the next five years for the company so we understand how we're going to be the utility of the future. Don't succumb to analysis paralysis (or analysis conformance).

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good work life balance, great benefits package, a lot of different opportunities to try new roles especially on rotations.

    Cons

The culture is a working progress. A good portion of the company are lifers and this poses issues when working with the younger generation. Company has ways too many re-orgs especially within Gas Ops and always seems to hop on fads, most latest is lean management but we will see where that goes.

    Advice to Management

Take time out of your busy management schedules to see how decisions you make will effect those who report to you.

I worked at Pacific Gas and Electric as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

The Marketing staff is dedicated and the marketing can be very interesting. How many companies can say they proactively look for ways to save their customer money? The energy field is very diverse in terms of the areas in which marketing is involved. For a corporate marketing environment, there doesn't seem to be too many really long days, which is nice.

    Cons

During the time I worked there, there seemed to be an "in" crowd in the department, which can leave some people out of the loop, not to mention feeling left out. Some budgets come and go at the direction of the CPUC (California Public Utilities Commission) so time is spent in the regulatory realm and trying to educating non-marketers on how to market.

    Advice to Management

Continue to solicit annonymous feedback from the marketing teams so you know what is going on. Create stronger working relationships betwen product and communications teams.

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great benefits, good schedule, engaging work most of the time. Good coworkers to work with and everyone is generally trying to do the right thing for the company and our customers.

    Cons

Undergoing many changes, there is a reorganization almost every year. Communication between different groups could use improvement and can feel siloed.
