I worked at Pacific Gas and Electric as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

great environment and tremendous opportunities to learn new technologies and network internally. Folks are genuine and truly take pride in their jobs. Great environment to work in.

    Cons

recent down sizing in IT and unfortunately great technical folks who are passionate about their work, subject matter experts in their field and belive in always helping others lost their jobs while the "friends and family" employee/contractors who dont have the proper skill sets keep their jobs .

    Advice to Management

Hire more employees who have ethical integrity and truly care about making a difference in the community and stop outsourcing to over paid consulting firms.

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great benefits: Pension, 401k, and health benefits (annual health screening provides you with reserves to cover all medical - unless you/family had a reason to use medical more, then health screening money won't be as sufficient). The good old boys club is almost dead, which helps contribute to a safer working environment and better career opportunities - no more sweeping things under the rug.

    Cons

Like most jobs your experience is based on your manager. PG&E San Francisco and PG&E everywhere else are two different worlds. Regularly you have to remind people that all of PG&E's territory isn't like SFO. Overall not many cons.

    Advice to Management

A little more detail as to where we are heading as a company would be helpful. We get the market is changing, but when you speak in generalizations it sounds like we are just along for the ride rather than being the leading utility who helps define the change.
