I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric as a contractor (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Employees are good people who want to improve things.

    Cons

Management is terrible. Many have little to no leadership skills, little to no constructive communication, many have little actual knowledge of the department functions that they lead.
The technology and software development/project methodology is not only antiquated, it's been considered bad practice for over a decade. Do not work here if you want to have a career in IT outside of utilities or other industries stuck in the 20th century.

    Advice to Management

Collapse some of the layers, there is a lot of dead weight in the management pool. Stop promoting based on longevity and start promoting on skills. Some department managers have created very hostile work environments. When you get complaints about management and work environments, take action instead of ignoring the problem or retaliating against your employees.

I worked at Pacific Gas and Electric (Less than a year)

    Pros

benefits, matching 401(k), pension, vacation, sick time, floating holidays, nice people for the most part

    Cons

red tape, old-boy network, no one runs the ship internally, employees are not ambitious, management is poor, processes are broken, low salaries (everyone I spoke with took a big pay cut to join and was given the line that the pension and other benefits make up for the low salaries. Not true.) Salaries are competitive for those with 2-5 years of experience but not for anyone with more than 5 years of experience. The current litigation regarding San Bruno has the potential to severally damage the company.

    Advice to Management

Outsource energy efficiency to 3rd parties, standardize processes/incentives/products across all IOU's in CA to simplify how customers work with utilities. Stop wasting rate payer funds by trying to implement and program manager energy efficiency programs

    Pros

Interesting and challenging positions with opportunity to make a significant contribution.

    Cons

Most positions do not get filled. Career site is difficult to navigate. Difficult to connect. Screen freezes and session lost mid-session.

    Advice to Management

Value candidate with experience and wisdom. Stop rejecting candidates based on age. Don't post positions you have no intention of filling

I worked at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Salary for some positions, pension and the illusion of potential. If you're in the Union, the pay can reach insane amounts.

    Cons

They follow the Dilbert principle... The way you get rid of a bad employee is to fire them or promote them. Usually PG&E does the latter.

It is also extremely incestuous. Affairs happen all the time in every department.

If you're a work horse, don't count on moving up because they need somebody to do the work.

Even though they ask for you to speak up, if you do, you're the first on the chopping block when it comes to lay offs.

Sr Management and management lie a lot... To your face.

Many people think it's a stable place to work, but with the pending fines and trials coming up, don't expect to stay too long...unless you're one who kisses up. If you don't kiss up and play the game, this is not a stable place for you.

They claim safety is their #1 priority, but I've experienced times I've worked over 24 hours and had to drive home, only to be called in a few hours later. If you say no, you're reprimanded.

    Advice to Management

Stop adding layers to upper management! The creation of Jr managers or VPs and SR managers or VPs only add to the bureaucracy.

I worked at Pacific Gas and Electric as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Initially, the IT culture was based on the project team, which was self directed and sensational! As the months wore on and the project had slipped schedule, IT mgmt can in and started directing strategy and tactics- watch out!

    Cons

IT leadership is old school, inefficient, and more than willing to direct the project team, micro manage, and generally push the project into a high risk profile. Poor leadership, complete lack of tools and process, and generally no alignment across teams or shops.
Let's hope PG&E doesn't face any real competition any time soon- they will get their lunch eaten!
If you join as a Consultant, beware Consultants are considered and treated as second class citizens at this firm. Employees and certain long term vendors are enabled and supported, others will be ignored and actively fought by the culture.

    Advice to Management

Hire the correct talent, then support and enable them. Partnering w/ the business is not a bad thing, and in fact, this is the future! Trust your teams, and stop second guessing and micro-managing them!!
Be willing to accept more agile approaches, including embracing the truth and facts- these are not notions to fear!

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

None - an unnecessarily difficult place to ply your craft

    Cons

Take 30 seconds; imagine working at PG&E. Really think about it what it would be like, the people, the bureaucracy, the politics. You are correct, that is exactly what it is like.

    Advice to Management

    Fire yourself, and your peers.

I worked at Pacific Gas and Electric (Less than a year)

    Pros

None. There is nothing great about working in such a horrible environment!!

    Cons

Please, please consultants and contractors stay away from this horrible company. IT is the worst I have ever worked with. Their process and procedures and the IT methodology is completely bloated. You are not a PM, you document all these ridiculous templates that make no sense whatsoever. There are better companies to work for out there. The red tape at this company is off of the charts. No one wants to make a decision, and the PG&E employees do not want to do any work. They are rude people here. They treat you like a robot here, not a human being. STAY AWAY!!

    Advice to Management

None. The management here does not care one bit.

    Pros

Easy commute to work in San Francisco.

    Cons

Sexist bullying, scapegoating, and aggressive intimidation used against women in IT.

    Advice to Management

Provide required oversight to neutralize these gender bias issues for contractors and employees, and review and get rid of employees who have issues on file for these behaviors.

    Pros

You can work hard and get some I repeat some opportunities. It is just an okay place to work

    Cons

Management is not as educated as other ITgroups I was at. Supervisors and some "managers" are not required to have a college degree I have never heard of this in an IT shop. As a result, management is very weak
