I worked at Pacific Gas and Electric as an intern (More than a year)

    Pros

Great atmosphere with great employees. Can be a bit stagnant at times, but if you fine the right team, it's a blast to work.

    Cons

A lot of older people there. If you're young and want to explore your career, this might hold you back and make you comfortable with where you are.

    Advice to Management

Keep looking for youth. Find a better way to recruit as well.

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The most diverse company I ever worked for. Desire to get better. There are many opportunities, everywhere, but there is this sense and urgency to improve. Also safety is a true #1 priority, not just a slogan.

    Cons

Aging work force. Many great employees are retiring and with that a lot of experience. The union is very powerful and sometimes it blocks progress and efficiency for political reasons. Any positive change is often delay and at times stopped by the union. I'm sure they do good things as well. But, is it needed today? CA laws are very good and employee focused. I wish the union will focus a bit more in profitability and long term impact.

I have been working at Pacific Gas and Electric full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

It really is the leading utility in the US. PG&E employs some of the most competent and motivated people I've ever worked with. Lots of opportunity for advancement.

    Cons

Typical bureaucracy and inefficiencies you'd expect in a large company. There are a lot of redundant efforts headed by different organizations within the company.

    Advice to Management

I'd advise management to streamline the hiring process. Consolidate and use fewer project management systems. Consolidate change management efforts as well. Rely less on email.

    Pros

PG&E is one of few companies left that offer a pension to employees. On top of the above average benefits one normally sees at a career level job, PG&E offers multiple additional resources and perks such as discounts and complimentary services, too many to mention. Example being a discount on the utility bill (25% off - if it's with PG&E), Major cell carrier bill discounts, travel, loans, commodities etc. PG&E really cares about health and well being and strives to reduce work related injuries (from desk jobs to field work) by offering ergonomic assessments and equipment to reduce fatigue.

    Cons

Being a big corporation, change moves slowly and bureaucracy is common gossip around the office. When there is change, it's usually across the board which is both disruptive and can put people out of positions even if their performance is exemplary since they are now a gold plated square peg for a round hole. Though upper management (which there is many layers of) does put effort to reposition these employees its can sometime be hard for the peons to get themselves heard with results.

    Advice to Management

For some reason at PG&E, supervisor/manger roles do WAY more than just manage people. They often have a full-time position as if their people managing is a sidebar. This may just be a semantic issue with title positions but can be misleading to the workgroup below that they serve. There needs to be less management layers, the corporate ladder is so step Usain Bolt would grey withered before reaching the half-way mark.
