Great benefits and 401K matching. Option to work from home on Fridays. Nice co-workers. Open to express ideas. Work life balance.

A lot of processes are manual. Training for new employees very limited. Too many meetings and receive to many emails. Don't always hire the most qualified person for the job.

I worked at Pacific Gas and Electric as a contractor

    Pros

Large corporation with lots of benefits & resources to compete for talent. Nice campuses in DT San Francisco, San Ramon & Concord

    Cons

Risk averse culture stifles true innovation at a time when the entire utility industry faces real threats from an aging workforce, cybersecurity & aging infrastructure.

    Advice to Management

The world is changing faster than the utility industry. Find a way to match the speed of innovation of risk becoming irrelevant.

I worked at Pacific Gas and Electric (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Really, it was a great paying job right out of college. Unfortunately, that's about where it eneded. I had multiple positions within the company during my time there, I just couldn't be blinded by the reality of the mediocre pay and health benefits I don't need.

    Cons

If your half intelligent, then play your cards right with management that is probably not at your level. A 'good ol boy and gals club' mentality where you laugh it ridiculous jokes, overload your calendars with meaningless meetings to feel important and be told "don't hit it out of the park, just get on base". Average is promoted and the intellectual is muted. The risk of actually changing anything is a threat to the lifer drone who looks to fill a seat until retirement.

    Advice to Management

Stop recruiting talented, intelligent people who are motivated. Pay attention to your turnover rates and the complete disappointment of your current staff, most are extremely disappointed and wish they had some meaningful work. Problem is your "redundancy" model of cross training your fellow co-worker of those who are on "rotation" in a department where they have no business being in(music mager in a senior project management role!?) a complete slap in the face to someone who has worked so very hard through college, or their career to have someone come in to be groomed to take half of your already non-existent challenging work load. Oh yeah, don't be late to your next meeting! Change your model, challenge your employees to actually do real work, and stop brining in failed management regimes from other companies to affect change. A caution to all, don't be the next scape goat, do something you will be challenged at and actually get paid for a skill set, other than drone like sentencing.

I worked at Pacific Gas and Electric (More than a year)

    Pros

Many good employees working hard to make a difference

    Cons

Significant lack of leadership in the area of program and project management. IT people are allowed to be the overall project managers, instead of just managing the IT development aspect. This is a disaster. Projects cost 3-4 times more than they should and take years too long to complete. Management is against work at home even though employees want this. Also, management is against working at home, even though they are significantly short of office space and employees want this option.

    Advice to Management

Leadership needs to get a clue about business management, about sound strategy, and about effective project management. You can't have IT running the business side of projects. And you can't have engineers being the project managers either. Not sure this advice will help. This is in part a monopoly issue. That is, if you don't have to compete against anyone, then you can just keep running things terribly inefficient and keep sucking money from the public and asking for more money, making up reasons that running your business costs so much. Since we already know that the CPUC has been in bed with PG&E and working deals with them in the back rooms, and they are the public's watchdog for this company, what will change? The truth is that competition is good. It is healthy. It requires that you run your business with good strategy and execution.
