Amazing leadership
Jun 1, 2022 - Human Resources Communications ManagerRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Strong CEO and leadership team who is walking the walk as they talk the talk.
Cons
Working with electricity and gas is dangerous. People in the field die if they are not safe. Reality is brutal. Improvements are being made but it's going to be expensive.

Leader in utility space, great vision for the future; fighting institutional inertia in IT department
Feb 6, 2016 - Senior Analyst, Supporting IT in San Francisco, CARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Great benefits, pay, employee events; this is a company that takes care of its employees Nice people, generally relaxed work environment Excellent executive leadership driving company toward diversified clean energy portfolio; leading utility in the country Optimistic about its future and its continued leadership in the utilities space
Cons
Institutional Inertia in IT organization (e.g. hard to accomplish tasks due to too many poorly designed governance processes, lack of technical depth in IT, lack of director accountability for finances, endless circular meetings, poor performers among individual contributors stuck in careers and holding out for retirement (10%-15% seriously), poorly designed and siloed information systems, overly customized applications on the verge of falling out of vendor support, rigid culture unable to quickly adapt latest technologies, etc.) Lot of executive turnover in IT, re-organizations, ineffective leadership; IT is not the driver of innovation in this company To summarize, this company is not a tech company and will be frustrating for someone coming from tech. Having said that, it is not a bad career stop. Take advantage of high salary and educational benefits, work on a few meaningful projects, and then leave before you stagnate.

Nothing great. Rank and file are good people
Cons
Good people among rank and file (especially field workers) are sabotaged by corporate leadership.
- Current Employee★★★★★
Pros
The leadership of the company is really working hard to change the culture and improve the company
Cons
Its still a very old company and change is slow

Working in Information Technology at PG&E
Jun 4, 2012 - in San Francisco, CARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Opportunities to work with new technology and significant investment in leading technologies
Cons
IT senior leadership does not have experience working in a regulated industry; also VERY limited experience working with utilities. New leadership model may not be effective. Business clients likely to realize limitations of leadership and become disenchanted. Senior leadership removed from and seems to be very disinterested in employee welfare and employee engagement.

CPUC (regulator) and internal chaos makes this company a tough one to recommend
Aug 4, 2021 - LeadershipRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
The company has many wonderful people. Great benefits. Post COVID, flexibility to work from home has been great. I think there are areas where it isn't chaos but they are hard to find.
Cons
Two issues: 1) the CPUC and 2) internally chaotic. The company is disorganized mostly due to an unreasonable regulator (CPUC) and too many competing priorities. The company's spend has doubled but it isn't in labor, labor has been cut dramatically and work has been increased. Work life balance is an issue because it doesn't exist. I do not believe the company is going to improve for the employees. Leadership is a revolving door and I truly think the regulation of PG&E is what cripples the company. It is a bunch of regulators who have no idea how the business even works, trying to feel important. Many of the regulators do not understand the basics of a gas and electrical company yet that is where all our time is spent - explaining it to them.

ESC Journey Engineer for PG&E
Sep 4, 2015 - Design Engineer in Avila Beach, CARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Working as a union represented employee has some perks as I rarely have to work OT, and my work life balance is great. The job pays well enough to live on the Central Coast. I feel the leadership is genuine and as transparent as they can be with us worker bees.
Cons
The Union is not perfect. I am self motivated and driven, but the engineer next to me could have seniority and may sit idle until told directly what to do, so he earns a better pay and there's no real incentive to try hard other than it's in my blood to do so.
- Current Employee★★★★★
Good place for broad career experience
May 17, 2021 - Principal Business Process Specialist in San Francisco, CARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Lots of opportunities to learn and grow. Strong employee benefits. New senior leadership team seems very strong and capable
Cons
High senior leadership turnover past few years

PG&E
Sep 28, 2017 - Project Controls Engineer in San Francisco, CARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Very large company with great benefits and resources to support employees in their work and career growth.
Cons
Many silos and variable management/leadership maturity. When teams are led well its a joy to work but more often there is weak leadership and work becomes a chore.
