    Chaotic / Toxic Culture

    Nov 9, 2022 - Project Controls Analyst
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Salary & Benefits are pretty awesome. Union protections depending on which job you have. Fantastic peers that work full-time at PG&E (contractors, not so much). LGBTQIA+ affirming - check out rating on the Equality Index.

    Cons

Never-ending reorganization of the company. Management will constantly break union rules especially regarding overtime, job description, and not paying STIP / greatly reducing STIP arbitrarily. Supervisors / Managers concentrate on quality metrics while piling on additional responsibilities. Quantity does not equal quality. Work / Life Balance is non-existent. Preferential treatment of Project Managers over Project Controls Analysts. This includes "blaming" Analysts for shortcomings in a Project Manager's performance. "Yes" people in management - especially Supervisors. Inadequate or complete lack of training when they roll out new processes, procedures, policies, and software. Departments work in "silos" - the Contracts dept will roll out a new requirement or software without consulting the departments that have to actually follow the requirement / use the software. Same with IT & Engineering. Basically, the "support" departments do not consult with all stakeholders. The way the company uses SAP and especially P6 is ridiculous. "Hustle" culture in play here although the company is constantly talking about "work/life balance." Overall, chaotic / toxic work culture.

Great Department/Bosses - Suboptimal Company Structure

Nov 14, 2022 - Gas Operations Intern in San Francisco, CA
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Work Life Balance. Managers and Leaders are understanding of employees. Diversity and Inclusion. Importance of work.

    Cons

Distribution of work uneven between different roles. Slow and inefficient corporate structure. Work can become monotonous.

    Great company to work for

Nov 7, 2022 - Associate Engineer in San Ramon, CA
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Good benefits and a stable company to work for.

    Cons

I worked in an internal consulting department within PG&E, which required remaining billable. This has some benefits but often leads to stresses that you may not find elsewhere within PG&E.

Poor culture for scientists & engineers

    Nov 1, 2022 - Principal Data Scientist
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

    - Name recognition - Working on important problems for California - Good for people who like consulting, with traditional IT/MIS backgrounds, economics, political science & union lineworkers - Good for people who like mostly remote work

    Cons

    - Hierarchical culture, with siloed departments that do not collaborate well with each other - Excessively process-heavy and lack of managerial technical risk-taking - Fear-based competitive culture - Excessive focus on identity politics in the name of diversity & inclusion without the corresponding managerial action to support company line - Middle management/workers too far removed from what's happening in the field
