I have been working at Pacific Sun part-time

    Pros

A beloved alternative weekly I'm proud to be associated with. Office full of strong, smart women, ethical, passionate editor. The more I take ownership, the more responsibility I'm given. Boss does not micromanage or hold grudges, treats employees with respect.

    Cons

Ad Revenue prioritized over content quality; boss's rationale occasionally elusive; how open communication channels are fluctuates, seems arbitrary (possibly obfuscated) very inefficient processes, too many hands in too many locations. Lots of lipservice to readers, but sometimes they get blown off and there's nothing I can do about it. Have to defend dubious decisions.

    Advice to Management

The prouder staff is of the paper's editorial content, the happier they will be... Give readers the content they want, and the circulation will drive up ad sales. Make the paper longer. So cutting so many corners to reduce costs. You're demoralizing your employees.

I worked at Pacific Sun full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Wonderful staff. Made what I consider to be lifelong friends from this period in my career.

    Cons

Underfunded. No money to be really expansive.

    Advice to Management

The magazine was sold. All new players except for one sales rep. (Who is fabulous, by the way.)

I worked at Pacific Sun as an intern

    Pros

Hands on training from a very kind staff. Small office so getting to know the team was easy.

    Cons

Unpaid internship could not be turned into a full time job due to the small budget.

I worked at Pacific Sun full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Lots of design freedom, and many other special projects aside from the weekly edition.

    Cons

New management completely out of touch with the product, the county and all of the staff.

    Advice to Management

    Get new management. Start over.

    Negative Outlook

    Pros

Really great people. Everyone supportive of everyone else in this small media company. No office politics...everyone focused on the work itself. Like a family.

    Cons

Low salary when there is a salary. Sales reps work on commission only. No benefits. Expenses not reimbursed. The paper has lost its way editorially. Slowly dying paper.

    Advice to Management

Find an investor to put money into the business rather than continually cutting back. Find a strong publisher who understands the business and who forms relationships in the community.
