I worked at Pacifica School District full-time

    Pros

Small district - but a lot of red tape.
    Mostly nice school staff members.
Full Kaiser family benefits but if you don't have a family your low salary pays for other people's families....
Always jobs open- easy foot in the door.
    Near Ocean.
Advancement usually from within to coach and administrators.

    Cons

Abundance of money is spent on people who do not ever interact with kids or teachers (ie coaches that do nothing.)
D.O. doesn't listen to teachers - about salary, calendar or curriculum.
    Bad superintendent over compensated.
SALARY is very LOW new teachers are stuck with SAME salary for 2 years!!!
New teachers make an avg of $16/hr.
Surrounding districts pay $10,000-$20,000++ more a year.

    Advice to Management

Respect and pay your teachers fairly and cut many of these 100k + people who don't work with kids. Ask coaches to actually come help with low students. You pay 2 full time reading coaches but they never help kids at least pay for after school tutoring. Spend the money on teachers and kids not the district office.

I worked at Pacifica School District full-time

    Pros

PSD has an incredible staff of people who value the children and each other. There is genuine collaboration and focus on teamwork. The parent community is incredibly supportive.

    Cons

Historically, it is one of the lowest paid salaries in San Mateo County. There have been excellent health and welfare benefits that add to over compensation, however, the reason I left was for a salary increase. It will continue to lose excellent teachers who cannot afford to live in the Bay Area while teaching in Pacifica.

    Advice to Management

The District administration needs to understand that value is often shown by compensating your hard-working teachers. They need to prioritize on retaining excellent teachers and increase the salaries.

I have been working at Pacifica School District full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Teachers are professional and have given up a lot to keep the district afloat. Teachers really care. Benefits are good for families of all employees. Retirement packages were great. Most facilities are clean and safe. Kids are great and most are so kind. Parents are mostly fabulous.

    Cons

This used to be a small town district where everyone knew your name. Sadly this is not true any more. Teachers lost money and students lost school days when the district was broke we tried to give to keep the district going. Class sizes increased (33 in upper grades and 25 in lower grades) and special classes were cut. Then, that same year, the management was given raises by the Board. Promises made to the community of using the parcel tax to reduce class sizes and get back on our feet was actually spent to pay the superintendent more than most make in the highest paid districts in the county. The money wasn't spent to lower class sizes. Many management members don't even know the names of the employees. The district likes professional development so much but, they cut employee pay to provide it. Computers were required to be turned in for "updates" but instead after the whole summer and paying 3 tech guys we all got a new WiFi password installed and suddenly we're not allowed to know the password. There is a lot of new oversight of teachers but strange things seems to be going on with the management. All of the Management members make $100,000- $230,000 a year (plus $40,000-$50,000 in benefits) starting teacher salary? JUST hit $40,000 this year. Our superintendent makes 6 times what a starting teacher makes... teachers who have been there for 10 years make $51,000.

    Advice to Management

Transparent CA shows what money is being made by who and it's not the teachers. While other districts are being given raises you are asking the teachers to take cuts after you have been given raises multiple times? Give the students smaller class sizes and special classes like music. Why has music, art, science, language, computers and library been cut over and over while our superintendent has been given raise after raise. Is it really OK that our new leader bought a brand new Mercedes and Louis Vuitton while our students got stuck in bigger classes and lost art and music? Is that really ok with the School Board? As parents and some former teachers you should be ashamed of yourselves for not only giving her another raise but also agreeing to her for 3 more years!!!
