    Pros

Packeteer was a company that excelled with work/life balance. The job always got done, but there was flexibility in terms of when and where that work was accomplished.

    Cons

The company did not have it's act together in terms of acquisitions -- they continued to be run almost as separate organizations with too many different products, technologies and approaches that should have been harmonized.

    Advice to Management

It's all in hindsight, but please try to avoid having things get back enough that we're acquired. (Packeteer was acquired by Blue Coat in June 2008.)

    Pros

Employees treat each other with respect; this is a very professional environment, but still a fun place to work. The company promotes a good work/life balance. Compensation is competitive, although health benefits can get expensive.

    Cons

Senior management has made poor decisions, leading to a declining stock price and lackluster sales. The company has taken on too many projects and spread itself thin.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your engineering team when setting direction of the company. Learn from past mistakes and don't make hasty decisions.
