    I worked at Pagoda Academy

    Pros

You had the chance to meet new students, from a variety of backgrounds, every month. Coworkers were also, generally, fun people to work and hang out with.

    Cons

Management was rarely on your side; they'd claim to be, but come review time, you'd find they'd amassed a file of your faults, and the criticism was far from constructive.

    Advice to Management

It's hard to give advice to management when you never know, from month to month, who the next manager might be. Sometimes they left of their own accord; sometimes, they were effectively pressured out of their position.

I worked at Pagoda Academy full-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

Always pay on time, transparent systems, structured schedules, peer reviews, adult students

    Cons

Have to work within system, little room for flexibility, split schedules, don't decide own vacation days

    Advice to Management

Better structuring of schedules and time management to be more efficient, more incentives to work on weekends/nights, more incentives for student retention

I worked at Pagoda Academy part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Everything seemed very fair. Students choose the teachers they want to study with, and it's a very merit-based organization. If you're a good teacher and can build good rapport with students, you'll have plenty of work. The students are generally quite serious about their studies and they come from diverse backgrounds, so it never gets boring for the teacher. The staff were excellent, very supportive, helpful when I needed...

    Cons

Since the students are always free to choose any teacher they want, it's possible to end up with less hours (and thus less pay) than you expect. I think there is a minimum guaranteed amount per month, but really it comes down to how good you are at attracting students to work with you and to continue choosing to study with you. The online curriculum isn't very good or compelling, but if you're experienced it's pretty...

I have been working at Pagoda Academy full-time for more than 2 years

      Pros

*I am a group class teacher--one-on-one teachers are on a different contract and have very different working conditions --Interesting, interested students. I've met business owners, PhDs, tv reporters, a retired helicopter pilot (and admittedly a lot of bored housewives and retirees). You learn every day from students and they're eager to learn from you. --Faculty managers in my branch have generally cared about and...

      Cons

--Hours, of course. Nearly all teachers have split shifts, though in some cases it's possible to maneuver your way into a block schedule with seniority. Getting an apartment very close to work will greatly lessen the impact of this--the housing manager was willing to look outside of his default neighborhood for me. --Upper management seems to either be greedy or out of money. In the last year scheduled raises have been...

      Advice to Management

--Either invest in your native speaker program or get rid of it. Both compensation and curriculum development are lacking and the program is turning into a shell of a once-profitable business line as a result. --Don't shuffle faculty managers from branch to branch so much, as it makes it difficult to develop stable working relationships and branch practices.

I worked at Pagoda Academy full-time

      Pros

People think that working at a major language institute is more acclaimed, thus it gives you an opportunity to place yourself on the map. If you can teach test oriented classes, such as OPIC, TOEFL, or TOEIF, and look good, you have a chance to make a good income.

      Cons

This company has zero benefits for instructors. The working hours are inconsistent and the pay is not great/stable, especially if you are not teaching a test oriented class. They even charge you for printing and using the Word software on a monthly basis. This is a bit outrageous. The company is also owned by a Christian family and they do not consider atheist or other religious options. Although it's not often, employees...
