    Good times are over.

Aug 23, 2021 - Software Engineer in New York, NY

    Pros

    - still some smart people left - decent comp (if you joined pre-IPO), - used to have good perks, but most of them got cut during pandemic and with constant cost-cutting that started in advance of IPO

    Cons

    - poor work-life balance - if you don't mind 24/7 on-calls and frequent "surges", this is your home. - professional growth perspectives are virtually non-existent. It's all very random and mostly luck/politics dependent. If you are "unlucky" and got assigned a crappy team/project early on, you will struggle to ever get considered for anything better. You will not learn much and just get stuck. There are few good teams, but since most others are so mediocre, you are unlikely to get into a good one - and moving "upwards" internally is very hard. - it's worse if you also get a lead (Palantir term for "manager") who lacks motivation/time/power to support you. As burnout gets more widespread, more long-timers either quit or become jaded and stop caring, the chance of getting such a manager is higher. - in terms of coding you will mostly fiddle with internal frameworks. If you are "lucky" you might get to work on something new, otherwise expect vast legacy codebases with plenty of tech debt and support issues. Or they could put you as a "dev" on infra... - leadership is still rather inexperienced and often not sure what they are doing. They try to call it "flat structure", in practice there are few unofficial "power clusters", centered around people who are actually important and their decisions are enforced. Some got this authority by merit, others just by being close to founders/directors, "tenure" or being good at office politics. The result is low transparency on decisions affecting you, wasted effort and frequent reinventing the wheel. - if you are extremely unlucky they might put you on BD (business development). The main purpose of engineers there is to help customers use palantir products, especially when they break (and boy do they break often). Once you are in BD, Palantir will not let you "escape BD" until you quit.

    Big mission impact, low pay

    Pros

Great insurance benefits, free meals, a lot of collaboration overall with really smart people. Lots of travel opportunity if you want, both domestic and international. Robust software that is actually pretty amazing. Good company to pad your resume.

    Cons

Although the user-facing software is great, almost every time the back end is completely held together with sticks and rope and bandaid fixes. Your quality of life can be completely different depending on which customer you are allocated to. Depending on where you get resourced, you can be solving cool problems or helping a mega-corp increase profits. Don't join for the pay, they sell you on options as part of your total compensation, however it is illiquid and not as valuable as you think.

    Highly Political Culture

    Pros

Really cool problems to solve, problems that matter, access to interesting organizations, ability to make a difference. Really smart people and great tech.

    Cons

Working in an embedded capacity with toxic bureaucracies has infected the organization. Hiring people who thrive in these types of environments has been corrosive to the company's culture, and these hires have changed Palantir into somewhere I wouldn't recommend to a friend.

    Know what you're getting into

    Pros

Smart people. Really, really smart people. Generally motivated and nice. Perks are nice (until you realize they're not free). You'll learn a lot -- both professionally and about what you value as a human.

    Cons

Thought experiment: - recruit the top 1% of 1% of high achievers in basically every field (engineers, project managers, etc). - put them in a flat org structure where everyone is ostensibly "equal" - create a culture of "owning outcomes" - watch as people go from "total rockstar" to "not credible" in the span of 3 months or 1 project gone wrong - TL;DR: I struggle to think of a company or organization that spends as much time recruiting the smartest people in the world, and then subsequently spends so little time investing in an environment or culture to retain and empower those people. In short, more smart/motivated/amazing people fail at Palantir than (arguably) any other well-known company out there.
