I have been working at Palm Beach State College part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    +Adjuncts are genuinely appreciated

I'd heard horror stories about exploited and abused adjuncts at other institutions so I was hesitant to take this job on. The English/Communications Dept works hard to try and make adjuncts feel like they are a part of the team. So even though this may only be a temporary place where I can try to take the time to land on my feet elsewhere, I am happy here for now because I believe PBSC genuinely appreciates their adjuncts.

    Cons

    - The pay could obviously be better.

    - They're very strict on how many classes an adjunct can teach.

    - There isn't much opportunity to teach new or different classes.

I have been working at Palm Beach State College full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Palm Beach State College is a culturally diverse community college that has expanded business and nursing bachelor's programs. This school has qualified, caring faculty who are experienced in educating adults successfully.

    Cons

Palm Beach State College, like many Florida state colleges, has a really non-competitive salary range. The difference between a masters and doctorally prepared faculty member's salary is less than $2,000 annually which means I will need to work about 35 more years to pay off my tuition costs if I stay.

    Advice to Management

I would really like to recommend that faculty be truly evaluated on the success of preparing students for becoming productive, good citizens. Some faculty do not put the same skills, efforts or talents into this process, yet are reimbursed the same as those who do.

I have been working at Palm Beach State College full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The nursing program is a vibrant, current and credentialed curriculum that challenges nurses to achieve a higher level of understanding and performance. Faculty are experienced, and resources are more than adequate to meet the learning needs of todays transformational nursing leaders.

    Cons

The RN-BSN program is fairly new, achieving full ACEN accreditation in the spring of 2015. Classes are small, which is really an advantage, but takes extra effort to keep discussions full and ongoing, which is a large segment of the assessment process. The program is online, however, there are times when the students must come to campus, limiting the true "totally online" concept to a mainly online format.

    Negative Outlook

I have been working at Palm Beach State College full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

They do have a reasonable Medical and Dental Insurance Package, with choices between HMO and PPO. The people that (I) work with are great- very enthusiastic and helpful, including Faculty both intra- and inter-disciplinary, and also the staff, namely the Assistants to the Associate Deans (the main supervisors)

    Cons

However, there are rarely bonuses or raises on this mediocre base salary. Increases in rank are scant, and when so only involve a $1,000-1,300 increase to base salary. Most professor "overload" in courses taught simply to have a decent salary. The cost of living in PB County is extremely high and the College does not account for this.
