I have been working at Palo Alto Unified School District (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    - Well resourced for a California School District
    - Mostly accomplished and motivated teacher and administrator peer group
    - High Performing students
    - Professional Development is a focus
    - Generous community ( time and $)

    Cons

    - Community involvement often crosses the line ( non community members often think they know more than professional teachers and administrators)
    - Heterogeneous student population will stretch most teachers ( economic background, school readiness, achievement levels, values, languages spoken)
    - Big organization. Slow to make changes. Often do not look outside PAUSD for best practices. Often hard to know what is really the back-story on why things are they way they are.

    Advice to Management

Don't accept status quo. Do not let the success of the past keep, the you from looking for continual improvement and making change when needed

I have been working at Palo Alto Unified School District full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Salary, resources, and location! PAUSD provides excellent resources and support for teachers and students alike.

    Cons

Lack of consistency in curriculum, homework and other policies among elementary school sites.

    Advice to Management

Teachers should be strongly encouraged to change positions (or at least grades) every five years to keep teachers energized and prevent them from becoming stuck in their old ways.

I worked at Palo Alto Unified School District full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

High salary and compensation that recognizes continuing education, access to quality educational supplies, art, music and PE programs and lower classroom sizes.

    Cons

The cons associated with working with the public school system. While our school wasn't as focused on testing as in other districts, the standards are still present and taught. However, as a teacher you are given much more ability to be creative in your curriculum development. Some teachers complain about pushy parents, other teachers appreciate the parent-involvement.

    Pros

Overall PAUSD is a fair district with a strong commitment to teachers, students and staff. There is a great amount of solidarity among colleagues.

    Cons

Part time staff is not given full benefits which is petty and short sighted.

    Advice to Management

Advocate more for full benefits for part-time staff. Improve public transportation options.
