I worked at Palomar Community College part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

It wasn't much of a stressful environment because most students were respectful & staff was reasonably flexible with choosing weekly schedule hours

    Cons

I would say I wished there was more hands-on training on the actual math curriculum we tutored for. Not only training on how to serve a very diverse community, which was actually very informative & eye-opening. Though it did teach us how to become better tutors & individuals in general in serving students of all kinds of backgrounds.

    Pros

Good benefits. Strong Union. An opportunity to improve lives through education.

    Cons

I wish a majority of the full-time faculty would go beyond just teaching their classes and participated in shared governance. It's the same minority of faculty serving on all of the committees.

    Advice to Management

    Enforce Institutional committment.

I have been working at Palomar Community College part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Very nice working conditions with generally fair-minded individuals. The campus is a pleasant place to be and the students are generally attentive and happy to me in class.

    Cons

The work is part-time only and the pay is better at other community colleges. Little is done to assure that adjuncts with seniority are given the best course options.

    Advice to Management

The working conditions of adjuncts is absolutely horrific. The administration should be much more proactive in providing their instructors with good benefits, pay, and job security.
