  2. "The reality of paperchase"

    StarStarStarStarStar
    Current Employee - Anonymous Employee

I have been working at Paperchase Products

    Pros

    • Good staff discount: 50% off most things • Uniform is very relaxed

    Cons

    • Unreasonably low wage! Nearly minimum wage for sales assistants. No extra pay for London employees either... • Often long hours with unpaid breaks • Management often fault your flaws and fail to refinish good effort • Head Office seem to only care about you issuing loyalty cards and not the service you provide • Everything seems very sloppy and slow: handing out rota shifts...

    Advice to Management

Simply put, pay your workers more. Even just a small amount. I’ve worked for paperchase for just over a year and see 1 management, 4 supervisor and 7 sales assistant positions leave because they felt undervalued. It meant I had to train new staff and problems arose because of having a team of newly trained staff. My colleagues often feel their job has no value or impact on the business and that despite outstanding efforts,...

I have been working at Paperchase Products full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Generous discount of 50% without having to wait 3 months like most companies. This makes staff feel valued when new, increases passion for the products, thinking of what you can buy after your shift and makes newcomers feel part of the team. I love that they do this and do different compared to other retail brands. No uniform, you are able to express your creativity in your style, no discrimination against hair colour,...

    Cons

Pay is not London Living Wage. It would be amazing if it was. Hard to pay rent on low salary. Head Office above the London Flagship Store do not bond with staff on the floor. There is a big divide, they do not invite staff from Flagship Store to their sample sales. I think this should change considering we are below them working hard. The music is very loud and gives one...

    Advice to Management

You're doing a fantastic job. Head Office should build a better relationship with all staff on the floor in London Flagship Store, many might be interested to move up there in the future. Please do London Living Wage Paperchase for your Flagship Store for 21+ yrs.

I worked at Paperchase Products full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Discount, sample sales and head office location

    Cons

Bullying blame culture that comes from the top. Lack of support. Insecure managers who are busy covering their mistakes not interested in nurturing their teams. Dissatisfied workforce which is causing a large staff turnover and a very unstable working environment. Company has a real lack of focus and direction that has been reflected in very poor sales recently.

    Advice to Management

Support, help and nurture your team - especially when they are struggling. Work together to create a friendly working environment.

I worked at Paperchase Products full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Head office location, company discount, sample sales

    Cons

Archaic and extremely cliquey senior management in Head Office, making for an uncomfortable and isolating experience. Lack of support for any newcomers or anyone with a different point of view. There is a big blame culture used to disguise the lack of direction and input from heads of departments, there is no defined overall company strategy or vision. Favouritism and nepotism...

    Advice to Management

Address the cliquey unprofessional behaviour in the senior management teams and the bullying culture. Invest in people who are willing to develop and support newcomers so that they have a chance to succeed and drive the company forward.

I have been working at Paperchase Products full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Ever changing. No two days are the same. There's always something to do but you also still get time to talk to customers. You have the freedom to create a great atmosphere in your store the way you want to.

    Cons

Deadlines can be quite tight and workload heavy with communication from head office sudden.

    Advice to Management

Talk to other managers and never be afraid to ask for help. Chances are someone else is going through or has been the same thing.

I worked at Paperchase Products part-time for more than a year

    Pros

    - Worked with a good team - Personality and creativity recognised and encouraged on a lower management level - Colourful, creativity-inspiring environment

    Cons

    - Head office not really interested in store employees and won't take advice and customer feedback - Many designs ripped off smaller agencies/designers - Not much chance of internal promotion/encouraging store employees into head office jobs/ recognising and promoting internal talent - Try to put people on minimal hour contracts,...

I have been working at Paperchase Products part-time for more than a year

    Pros

    • well paid (but changing very soon...) • Area managers supportive to sales assistants/supervisors/all employees • shifts are never longer than 9 hours • Mostly sociable working hours • amazing employee discount • discount on expensive underglass products

    Cons

    • I do early morning deliveries and am worked considerably harder than other employees • often not given 11 hours between leaving and starting work • can be rota'd into work for 7+ days straight without a rest day • some HR employeees were rude and unapproachable when contacted • head office often make changes that make running the store more difficult than it needs to be...

    Advice to Management

    • Ensure all line managers are fully capable of leading a team and setting fair shifts • more praise and recognition for employees • allocate a fair amount of hours to be distributed between each store. Less hours in a week = dissatisfied and miserable staff, I'm either worked to death or have no shifts. No in between
