Technical Account Manager

Being a woman in tech, I only recently started advocating for myself at work about advancement opportunities. Because of this I wanted to ask this question to my male counterparts. When you have 1:1's with your direct reports and talk about career growth / aspirations what is your managers’ response typically? I’d like to gauge how my experience (negative) differs from others. For instance are you met with blockades, enthusiasm, dread, etc?

    Pros

Parallels makes great products for many markets segments. They have a great name in an exciting growth industry. Lots of great people learn from both engineering and management.

    Cons

With a small organization you wear many hats and switching them so much tends to lead to loss of productivity.

    A Great Place to Work

    Pros

Good benefits. Flexible schedules - getting your work done is what counts most. People love working here and get along very well.

    Cons

Not too many, actually. Senior management is very reserved and isolated - could communicate more to the employees. Rare to get an update on the business or direction of the company. Most information comes third hand. Company has split off divisions and has sold them. Opportunity for career growth is limited.

Two cultures (Russian/US) not always in Sync, management directionally challenged and top heavy

    Pros

Thankfully not overly matrixed. Pay/benefits is better than most organizations of this size. Work/life balance fairly balanced with no expectation of ongoing weekend work.

    Cons

Two cultures (Russian/US) with Russian culture favored. Leadership vision/direction/mandate doesn't filter down. Management is top heavy - the amount of VP's, Directors and Managers is extraordinary. Company is reactive vs. proactive in strategy.

    Laid-back organization, high demands

    Pros

    - The company is unique in its market niche and provides valuable solutions. - The technical level of RnD is quite high, a lot of talented and highly educated people work there. Possibilities to get valuable experience. - It's not one of those "corpy corps" that treat employees like cogs. The attitude toward subordinates and peers is positive and humane (not talking about higher management here). Issues get resolved easily, hours are semi-flexible, in case of emergency there's an option to work from home. - The company is young enough to allow for career opportunities.

    Cons

    - Still lots of growing to do, organization and processes wise. - Employees are always loaded with tasks, sometimes working overtime is highly expected and there's lack of reward for all the hard work. No bonuses, just regular salary which is not above market. - Higher management is not interested in resolving long-term issues with working environment in RnD office, for instance issues with parking and air conditioning. - They try to promote company 'options' as bonuses and are over-promising going IPO 'soon' each year, but they never do. When asked, they turn it around and argue that all the company needs to finally go IPO is for employees to work harder.
