I worked at Park Avenue Armory full-time

    Pros

Opportunity to learn every aspect of non-profit management; great exposure to the arts and cultural scene; part of an amazing team of true professionals

    Cons

Sink or swim environment - can be very overwhelming if you don't have a thick skin

I worked at Park Avenue Armory full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Respected institution that shines on a resume, artistic networking opportunities, beautiful venue, passionate and dedicated staff

    Cons

All I will say is that this can be an unhealthy environment for people of color. POC deserve to be in a place where they will be valued and respected and this is not something that will happen (consistently) at Park Avenue Armory. It is likely you will be the only/one of the only POCs who is a full time staff member and although you are brilliant and qualified there is a high chance you will feel like a prop for the institutions...

    Advice to Management

Prioritize the decolonization of your institution. There are books you can read, conferences you can attend, people you can hire to assist you in this process. Park Avenue Armory has so much potential but first, the institution has to admit that there is a problem. Also, allow and encourage employees to take lunch breaks. Hire an HR representative. Treat your employees time with respect.

    No opinion of CEO

I worked at Park Avenue Armory full-time for less than a year

    Pros

used to have a reputation for paying above average for as arts non-profit; those days are gone, but there is still a little room to negotiate a good salary but it depends on the department. access to amazing performances. many of the lectures and front room performances are undersold so offers for free tickets are often. good staff discount for major performances.

    Cons

some of the highest turnover i've ever experienced in a company. as of this writing, no annual review for performance, no review of management by staff, no hr department. in my experience, new staff start looking for a new job within the first two months of working here, with many leaving within 18 months.

    Advice to Management

    unsalvageable.

I worked at Park Avenue Armory full-time

    Pros

I would give a 3.5 out of 5. Incredible institution, amazing colleagues, exposure to arts, its an environment where you quickly learn what are your strengths and what are your weaknesses.

    Cons

Demanding hours, senior management is not organized so in order to thrive you have to advocate for yourself, and poor communication between departments.

    Advice to Management

Encourage lunch breaks, treat staff equally

    Pros

Great location to work in with really invested and creative people. The job itself was something wonderful to be a part of and to be with so many people! Over-time pay helped too!

    Cons

None at all. I really do not see how the opportunity could be negatively impacting on myself.

I worked at Park Avenue Armory

      Pros

Co-workers are great to work with usually. You get to see a lot of cool art. Gives you a lot of time to think about yourself while standing around.

      Cons

Patrons are usually self-important and entitled. Lots of attitude from the customers. Standing for prolonged durations, 5-8 hours, is not for everyone.

      Advice to Management

Usher management is alright. The upper-upper management is a little too hush-hush and unfriendly (they don't like to look at you in the eyes because they see how soul-draining the work is).

I worked at Park Avenue Armory

      Pros

Small organization with room to explore different duties. Professional yet relaxed environment. Fun events

      Cons

Some of the cons would have to be the location, unreliable 6 train or the distanced M/F train make it hard to get to.

      Advice to Management

I think the management style works very well for the type of non-profit. There is a lot of communication amongst staff which is great.

I worked at Park Avenue Armory full-time

      Pros

Amazing, historical building, intriguing project with great potential. There really is no other place like it in the city.

      Cons

Most arts organizations operate in intense, demanding environments with high stakes. That does not necessarily mean that the atmosphere also needs to be as unpleasant , irrational and just plain mean as it is at the Park Avenue Armory. This is a small but growing company, and although its mission is laudable, the best lesson you will learn here is now NOT to treat people.
