I worked at Parker Hannifin full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great networking. Parker is a global company and has a limitless supply of experts on design, manufacturing, and material science. As a co-op, I was given tremendous freedom over three rotations to pursue projects that interested me. If you left unsatisfied, it was because you did not do your part in laying out your own goals.

    Cons

Because Parker is an old company, there can be difficulty in trying new things. Things move a bit slowly and there is a fair amount of bureaucracy.

    Advice to Management

Trust your engineers, be willing to spend money with eyes of long-term growth, even at the sake of short-term savings.

I worked at Parker Hannifin as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

The Tube Fittings Division was filled with long tenured, intelligent engineers. There were a lot of projects going on for the full time engineers, with some opportunities to contribute to those projects. Good chance to see and try a few different career paths.

    Cons

Overall, the only draw back to working with Parker was the amount of down time I experienced. Too much time was spent trying to find work to do during my six month internship, which at time left me to wonder why I had been hired in the first place.

    Advice to Management

Make sure there is a reasonable amount of work / projects for interns before hiring them. Provide more guidance to interns as to how to find work to do inside the office.

I have been working at Parker Hannifin full-time

    Pros

very good people to work with, upper management is on par with middle people. Good pay offer when it comes to bonuses. Like any other industry there are allot of opportunities to evolve and move up on the ladder.

    Cons

work load , fast paced programs, not a lot of testing time for current product and so stress can be a problem. There is no interest into investing in PLM software and so the releasing process in slow and prone to errors

    Advice to Management

invest in people and do not let sales guys ruin the product life cycle , engineers are the ones to have the most of the work load

I have been working at Parker Hannifin full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Freedom to explore ideas to expand business and promote growth. Management provides resources to help individuals improve job performance.

    Cons

Terrible vacation compensation. If one thing were to make me leave Parker, it would be this alone. Management is very lean on headcount though and doesn't replace people quick enough when someone leaves the company.

    Advice to Management

Push for better vacation compensation. Other companies with similar overal pay and benefits easily outrank Parker when it comes to vacation time. It's also time to change the 'use it or lose it' policy for vacation and let people accrue the time and save it up. Parker burns out their newly acquired talent because of the entry level vacation they offer and within a few years they leave. Your really need to look into this and offer your new employees better vacation time. No one should have to work there for 10 years before they reach 3 weeks, that should be the starting point, then 4 weeks at 5 years, and 6 weeks at 15 years.

Most important, when people leave the company, you need to bring in a replacement before they are gone so the transfer of knowledge from old to new can occur. The lack of this has lead to an enormous amount of lost knowledge and time while the new person comes up to speed. What should take 2-4 weeks take 4-6 months. You're really not saving money by waiting until somebody has been gone for 6 months before filling the position.
