I worked at Parker Poe part-time

    Pros

Most people are nice, however there are some who are not friendly or welcoming.

    Cons

Incredibly poor lateral integration. No attention is paid to laterals whatsoever, other than to criticize when you don't understand how the firm and the processes work when no one has explained it to you. I saw minority and women staff and attorneys treated horribly. The firm supposedly won some award for diversity but I never saw any justification for it. Strong culture of service partners rather than business development so often the partners kept the work instead of passing it down to junior attorneys because those partners weren't ever out getting new clients, they just focused on the existing clients. As a result, many junior attorneys did not have enough work to meet the billable hour requirement, which is high.

    Advice to Management

Reign in the boys club atmosphere and actually discipline partners that treat staff and junior attorneys poorly. Stop awarding the service partners and reward the attorneys, partners and otherwise, that are actually out there getting new clients. Figure out a better policy to share credit between originating, supervising, and billing attorneys. The current process encourages in-fighting for credit and percentages among the attorneys which doesn't serve clients or the firm well.

I have been working at Parker Poe full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Competitive salary; profit sharing plan

    Cons

There is no room for advancement for legal assistants. Even for outstanding annual reviews, the raises are minimal. There are no incentives in place for support staff to excel in their positions. Like most law firms, there is an outdated traditional mindset that has not changed with the times, specifically as it relates to life-work balance, family / children, and the subordinate role of legal assistants to attorneys .

    Advice to Management

Apply firm rules to everyone. There is favoritism here based on which attorneys you work for.

    Pros

Ok benefits. Flexible schedule. Some interesting work.

    Cons

No room for advancement. No professional development if you are not an attorney. No real incentive to work hard because it will not be rewarded.

    Advice to Management

Reward profitable employees with pay raises and bonuses.

I worked at Parker Poe full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Money and benefits of profit sharing and 401k. The company pays well until you reach the top of your salary range and then you can be replaced.

    Cons

So many new hires without the proper education and experience. Why pay your knowledgeable senior staff when you can hire individuals at 1/3 the rate and still save the company money?!

    Advice to Management

Time to make changes at the top

    Pros

Good pay and benefits for all.

    Cons

Promote great company culture through their respect of all non attorney staff but regularly let go temps. Do not give laterals enough attention or direction so many get lost in the mix and choose to leave.

    Advice to Management

Plan ahead for staffing needs and be up front with timelines when hiring temps.

I worked at Parker Poe full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good salary. Good Technology and Training for new software

    Cons

IT department not helpful, their solution always "reboot" with problems. Some assistants enjoyed "protective" status as positions were eliminated.

    Advice to Management

Since it changes every few years with new Firm Directors, the culture and atmosphere changes too.
