Great institution that respects and trusts its faculty

    Pros

Professors are afforded a lot of freedom, and it is empowering to come up with your own workshop activities and strategies, even when there is a core curriculum to follow. I would say that the absence of direct supervision and feedback is a double-edged sword. However, student course evaluations are helpful in this regard. You feel connected to your students and that you are really helping them.

    Cons

If you are a dedicated teacher and truly care about your students, you will end up putting in a lot of time – a lot more hours than what you get paid for.

    Pros

Great while you are still a student. The school allows professors to hire their students as research assistants as part of their curriculum.

    Cons

The pay isn't great for the amount of work and sometimes the work becomes less didactic. Bottom line is that the job can only be as good as the professor you are working with. Payments are often late

    Time to disrupt from within

    Pros

Excellent peers both Full Time and Assistant Professors, an extraordinary network of people leading the design profession. Students from extremely international backgrounds. Conscious discussions about how to make the school more inclusive.

    Cons

Parsons is successful and growing and needs a management layer, not more work added to the plates of full-time professors. The New School taxes Parsons as the cash cow of the school, and underinvests to prop up small programs that desperately need to invent themselves. Clearly, the business model of higher ed has to change - our students need support in a constantly transforming industry when they graduate.

Immersive research opportunities in New York City and other urban contexts.

    Business Outlook

    Pros

At Parsons, the ability to collaborate with other New School professors is a unique opportunity which provides a deeply interdisciplinary experience. Lots of resources and knowledgable faculty.

    Cons

While the immediate faculty works hard to support the Graduate Assistants, the overall structure of adjunct and part-time faculty is not one of support, mentorship, or encouragement. The administration fought against the right to unionize and struggles remain ongoing over fair pay, access to benefits, and many other critical issues.
