I have been working at Party City full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    The co-workers
    The discount
    Flexible hours

    Cons

    The co-workers
    Customers/ customers children
    The disrespect
    The pay
    The unrealistic expectations
    The lack of praise
    The amount of condescension

    Advice to Management

Pay your associates and managers better. I have been spit on and had people not only threaten to hit me but actually take swings. I can't confront thieves but I'm expected to have corresponding on hands and actual amounts. The only time my work is praised is by my customers. But if any one thing is wrong there is no lack of condescending comments on my work. Treat your employees better.

I worked at Party City part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Seasonal, get to wear fun stuff, most people are in a good mood

    Cons

Depending on the location - angry show moms.
Lack of communication from managers, petty college girls who ice out new people.

    Advice to Management

Hire good workers and don't hire girls who are all friends. There was more gossiping and drama than anything else happening. The older employees were being treated like "losers" by a group of teenage know-it-alls. Way to lose the actually valuable employees real fast.

I have been working at Party City full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Family atmosphere, Friendly supervisor/co-workers, Easy position to learn, flexible scheduling, you can move up the ranks quickly.

    Cons

Micromanaging district manager, poor scheduling (not enough staff on duty), be prepared to do the job of 3 people, Co-workers don't always jump in to help when busy, when there is a full staff your hours will be cut. They don't appreciate the good help they have. Nothing ever seems to be good enough.

    Advice to Management

The need to look into the behavior of their district manager. I can see why there is high turnover at our location. He is a bully to put it bluntly.

    Pros

Great products, nice discount. Fast paced

    Cons

Never a 50 hr work week, work\life balance is all work. Very task driven with not enough time or people to achieve leaving salary managers to burn out.

    Advice to Management

Spend a week in a store

I worked at Party City part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

-The customer interaction is what makes the job fun. Granted it's retail so you get a range of customers but overall because of the fun atmosphere of it being a party store, you get to connect with the customers over it.

-If you have a good team that knows what they are doing you can set a good reputation of being "the" party city to go to (friendly competition with the other neighboring Party Citys).

-You become a party and balloon specialist that can transfer skill into your life outside of Party City.

    -Flexible scheduling

    Cons

-Higher Management (Corporate) don't really interact much with the sales associates to the point where when the come and do store visits, it is an uncomfortable feeling and you just cannot wait until they leave; In smaller words, they make you feel small.

-There has been too many changes within the district zoning and within the people who are in those higher positions to where it makes you think it's time to leave because no one in higher management can stay in that position long enough and something funky is going on.

-Corporate strives for getting an unrealistic amount of customer emails but they are so out of touch with what being in the store is like everyday to realize that customers 70% of the time DO NOT want to give them emails because, Party City is just like other retailers and sends out too many emails.

-Unless you are going above and beyond above the rest and are looking to be full-time and take on a team lead position or a full-time assistant manager position, your pay will be low forever until you resign.

    Advice to Management

-Get to know the little guys on a "we-are-equals" type of relationship.
-Cut it with the emails. I've been with Party City long enough that I can wholeheartedly say the majority of customers do not care to give out their email address. The Upside to this was that now you can go on the website and get the coupon for that week straight from the website so now emails are a thing of the past UNLESS for e-receipts.

    Pros

It's an upbeat entertaining job. You get to work with families and kids from all different backgrounds and the job is centered around enjoyment.

    Cons

The management have no idea what they are doing and if they do then they're fraudulent people that practice favoritism.

    Advice to Management

Treat a job like a job and treat all employees fairly. Empathize more with ALL of your employees because we are ALL human beings, not just a select few.
