I worked at Pasadena City College (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Helping students and the community

    Cons

Part time workers have zero chance for advancement when applying for full time jobs, also no access to paid time off or health benefits, only state mandated sick time of 3 days per year. Management plays budget games and shows extreme favoritism with certain people.Lots of sexual harassment and inappropriate relationships among staff.

    Advice to Management

Value your hourly workers and give them a chance to succeed and they will reflect well on such an important part of the community.

I have been working at Pasadena City College part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Plenty of Opportunity. The institution is large enough to find some type of employment to start, then able to move laterally within the school.

    Cons

At the mercy of external forces.... state and federal funding will always be an issue when working for a California Community College. With that said, job security may forever be an issue.... or a blessing depending on how the economy holds up.

    Advice to Management

Keep employees in the loop as to current legislation and possible budget upticks and downfalls so everyone is on the same page about the status of the institution.

    "Adjunct Faculty - Accounting"

I have been working at Pasadena City College part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The opportunity to make a positive impact on students; to teach and inspire them in their accounting studies; to make students understand that solid accounting knowledge will benefit them in all aspects of their lives and careers. Each class provides me with the opportunity to also learn from students and improve my teaching abilities.

    Cons

There needs to be better standardization in the accounting curriculum among classes. I tested students every 2 chapters to ensure they understood materials. Other professors did not as it is a lot of work. It would be better for students to have a somewhat consistent syllabus among all classes.

    Advice to Management

Provide a stronger framework so all professors and adjunct faculty provide more consistency in testing, class materials, etc. This will benefit all students and strengthen the program.
