I worked at Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA full-time for more than 19 years

    Pros

Some of the best reason to work for this organization is their dedication to provide the best animal care possible and to develop low cost public programs for their surrounding areas. PHS & SPCA also works with other agencies to place pets into their forever homes and to rehabilitate wild life and relocate when possible. As an employee PHS & SPCA provided stable employment with benefits and a opportunity to learn more...

    Advice to Management

Review previous and current management style and groom future management from inside sources when possible.

I worked at Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA full-time

    Pros

Frontline staff work very hard and have passion. Working with a humane society that has a large amount of donations has its perks. Good benefits.

    Cons

Disorganized management, very hierarchical, lots of middle management with limited to no experience leading nor managing. There are some employees who have been there for a long time, "sitting on their laurels" (lazy and complacent about making things better); though there needs to be significant improvements for the animals' sake. The animal care is below standard of care due to poor efficiency, limited protocols, limited...

I worked at Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Working with animals; coworkers who care about each other; respected organization

    Cons

Pay way below what is comparable to other organizations; extremely poor management; Mismanaged HR; Dirty/poor working conditions at times

    Advice to Management

Treat your employees fairly. The pay isn't high enough to work there for only that reason. Most people do their jobs at the humane society because they love animals, but they are driven away because of the management. It says a lot when you drive people away from doing what they love.

I have been working at Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA part-time

    Pros

    - you can bring your pets with you to work (so long as you have an area to set them up and they aren't inappropriate in that space, i.e.: barking, destructive, etc.) - you can make a lot of positive relationships with the people you work with, as most of them share the same interests and goals - there are a number of positive stories relative to the animals that remind you of why you work in this industry - if you're...

    Cons

    - management doesn't know how to manage - there's a lot of favoritism for higher tier staff that leads to many complications - those in leadership positions prefer to dump the blame on those "below" them instead of taking responsibility for their mistakes - a lot of times work comes home with you, and your loved ones may not understand this - If you're part-time, you get a paper in a folder that basically says "you...

    Advice to Management

Learn basic management skills, please. Take responsibility for the mistakes made, and instead of brushing it off, work with people to find solutions to problems. Be receptive of your staff's concerns and address them, whether or not you agree with or like/dislike them personally.

I worked at Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Outstanding Benefits and working with animals

    Cons

Poorly managed, high turnover, hostile work environment, discriminates against people with disabilities, a lot of young employees with no work ethic, too much gossip, lack of structure, managers are lazy and don't care. This place is full of drama. Very risky to work here.

    Advice to Management

    Hire people that actually manage.

I have been working at Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The animal caregivers, volunteers, animal control all have heart and are very dedicated to the well being of the animals in their care. The system they use to move animals through the shelter is proactive and gets each animal out onto the adoption floor as soon as possible.

    Cons

Low morale Broken infastructure Always Asking for Money Poor policy training Unprofessional Leadership management is horrible. They are more worried about the Society's appearance to the public. It appears from the outside to be a great place to work but its all "smoke and mirrors". The old president was kind, friendly, and personable who lived by "quality of quantity" and the new president is the complete...

I worked at Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA full-time

    Pros

People who work at the shelter care about the animals. There is enough funding to do a little more than the other local shelters, so visually it's more appealing to visitors. The diversity of services provided to the community are high, from behavior training, adoptions, spay neuter, to licensing, etc.

    Cons

It's a political environment with an obvious divide between administrators and those below. There is poor communication between the two, especially when it comes to implementing new programs. The most knowledgable individuals are often not asked for their input. HR is the worst I've ever seen. They constantly ignore employees and make mistakes on payroll. Workers who are lazy continue to be employed and hard-workers that...

My advice for management is to communicate with your employees about what your plans are and work together to implement these programs. The people down below need to feel a little bit more appreciated or they will leave. HR seriously needs to be revamped/replaced.
