"Relaxed environment. Some positions filled with very strong people, many other positions filled with very weak people."

I have been working at Patterson Companies full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Pressure from management is minimal
    Flexible hours for salary employees
    PTO is pretty decent
    Laid back culture

    Cons

Lack of drive from most employees
    Lackluster pay
Untrained middle management with mediocre to downright bad leadership and people skills
Company culture and values are not as advertised

    Advice to Management

Learn the ins and outs of management. Challenge people more. If someone makes a mistake let them know. Stop promoting people to their level of incompetence...A great technical person may not make the best manager.

I have been working at Patterson Companies full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Patterson is stable and loyal to their employees. Patterson has fair but certainly not generous or competitive benefits.

    Cons

There is no room for professional growth at Patterson. There is no talk of career paths or succession planning. If you want to find a place to hide for the rest of your career, this is it. If you want a place to shine and be challenged, look somewhere else.

    Advice to Management

This company talks a lot about their "culture" but I doubt anyone could define what that means.

I have been working at Patterson Companies full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The people you work with are nice. The customers are friendly. There is good job security once you get in.

    Cons

It can be very repetitive. After a while it is not challenging or rewarding. There is very little room for advancement or learning new skills.

    Advice to Management

Be more transparent. Recognize and reward hard work over tenure.

I worked at Patterson Companies full-time

    Pros

Co-workers are friendly, fun, and engaging. Everyone is able to work independently and trust that everyone completes the tasks/activities within the allotted time frame.

Note to future applicants: Negotiate upfront, know what you are worth, know the tasks and skills you'll be performing. Understand your potential growth opportunities and how you can contribute to that. You wouldn't get a second chance at this.

    Cons

    1. If you are the creative type, prepare to have your dreams crushed by following what management prescribes. Unless you play politics or are "in" with the right crowd.
    2. Surprise incidents are treated sometimes as blame games and had once had an incident focused on my area to distract the source.
    3. Creative thinking is allowed unless you point out the real cause e.g. project(s), timelines, or resources. Some areas are too entrenched in certain ways that alternative ways of looking at providing solutions are discarded or shelved.
    4. If you have attained other skills or traits that you want to utilize, you can forget that and you'd have to be laser focused on what you were hired to do. Okay, if you like to be a compliant drone.

    Advice to Management

Management doesn't seem to take advice. This review is for future applicants. Good luck.

    Pros

Flexible in hours, vacation, entrepreneurial vision. Some management was the best, but other managers did nothing or were not qualified for the position held. Energetic culture. If you had the right manager, that manager cared about how much money you were making.

    Cons

Management that did nothing or were not qualified had no supervision and were not questioned about strategy. Overhead must have been high because commission plan changed drastically enough to lose commission pay even in company growth. Wasted so much money on shipping things to personnel!

    Advice to Management

Take a closer look at middle level management. Make sure they are contributing to everyone's success.

I have been working at Patterson Companies full-time

    Pros

Patterson was once an outdated company but has turned a corner in recent years. The executives have put a greater focus on employee satisfaction throughout the company and are taking steps to make sure all employees are happy and Patterson is a great place to work.

    Cons

Patterson desparately needed to improve the employee experience. Outdated systems are still being phased out, as are outdated ideologies. The potential for continued growth is great, because there was a long way to go.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you're doing. Don't wait for talented employees to leave because the grass is greener on the other side.

...maybe too laid back. There isn't a good initiative on team organization or communication. Planning is a bit rough.
