I have been working at Patterson-UTI Drilling full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    They have nice drilling rigs.

    Cons

They have a time in position policy that hinders an experienced employee from moving up fast

    Advice to Management

Need to take in consideration a persons experience and their direct supervisor’s opinion on someone moving up instead of just dealing with HR

I have been working at Patterson-UTI Drilling full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good schedule, I'm not sure I can say anything else good considering all the things they have taken, See cons section......

    Cons

Constantly searching for tools to do jobs, learn positions on the fly because there is no formal training to move up to other jobs, they take money from you whenever they want, moving up depends on how much butt you kiss, don't seem to care about the rig hands at all, clothing ordered on the website is cheap and boots are garbage, bonuses and other money were taken from us so there is absolutely no incentive to wanna kill yourself working like they want you to, just here for the schedule.

    Advice to Management

Give us the dollar back per hour you took and bring back per diem to $51/day like it used to be, not the $35 you cut us down to, quit worrying more about your shareholders than your rig hands who make you the real money and are the backbone of this company, establish classes so people can actually learn positions like motors, derricks and driller, bring back AD position, people fail because they are not properly trained, improve choices in boots and clothing, things have picked up since the downturn so we should get back the money we've lost. Show the workers you actually care about them, not treat like just a number, quit assuming people can just be replaced easily.

I have been working at Patterson-UTI Drilling full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

All is well until you dare to get hurt on a rig.

    Cons

Went fine until I got hurt on a rig, management didn't follow proper protocol and tried to cover it up. I filed for worker's comp and HR told me I was automatically separated after 24 days and would have to start from the beginning- reapply, go in for another interview (I live out of state), the whole shebang. When I asked to see the policy I got radio silence. As of today I'm still an active employee in their system- I get all the emails, can update my insurance, etc. But no one from HR will reply to me with a return to work date.

    Advice to Management

I'm a combat veteran with an excellent work ethic, and I've seen more professionalism from the Taliban in Iraq/Afghanistan.

I worked at Patterson-UTI Drilling full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

No downtime, there is always something to do and tasks come and go very quickly. Pay and benefits are good. 14 on/14 off schedule is nice.

    Cons

If you are new, be prepared to go in completely blind. They do not offer actual classroom training other than typical HR stuff and your training on rig depends on whether or not your "mentor" wants to make an effort, so you will most likely be set up for failure.

    Advice to Management

Have actual training beyond diversity and respect. Ensure your experienced employees actually know how to properly train on the jobsite. Leadership classes should be a requirement for Mentors.
