    Pros

Rig hands are some of the best people I've ever met. Area manager is a great guy with awesome leadership, but needs to be allowed to lead without interference.

    Cons

Leadership beginning in Houston is very poor. You are a number more than a person. They would rather terminate a rig employee or management before they will look at why the situation occurred in the first place. Management wants to save their own jobs by blaming anybody but themselves for why they are in the situation they are currently in.

    Advice to Management

Reinvest in leadership and stop blaming people for specific situations without looking in the mirror. Management needs to get out of the office and help instead of yelling and screaming and threatening jobs from the office.

I have been working at Patterson-UTI Drilling full-time

    Pros

I was working with Patterson prior to the downturn and they avoided mass layoffs as long as they could. My family and I are greatly appreciative of that.
I have recently returned after almost 2 years and I couldn't be happier to be back. Love being out in the patch and cant wait to see how everything turns out this time.

    Cons

It is sometimes difficult to learn the position ahead of your current one.

    Advice to Management

Maybe for hands that are eligible for promotion make it possible to stay 1 day late to maybe learn a little hands on foe the next position?

    I worked at Patterson-UTI Drilling full-time

    Pros

Pay and time off are excellent.
Safety practices are well taught (TAUGHT being the key word here because some employees do not follow them and will get upset if you do).
Rig managers and company men will occasionally buy food for the crew.

    Cons

Human resources doesn't communicate with ANYONE unless someone is getting fired. The rig manager at my first rig didn't know I was suppose to be there until he called HR and threw a fit. When they laid me off, the called me into the rig manager's office the day before the end of my hitch and told me over the phone (violating the WARN ACT.)

The "class" that we were put through during orientation was feely good stuff to make the higher sleep better at night. All of it could be learned on the rig in a practical manner. The stuff they tell you about "no smoking or drinking in the crew house" will fly out the window when you get to one in a remote location.

The crew houses are decent, but WHEN the washer and dryer break down, don't expect anyone higher up than your driller to try to get it fixed. HR don't wash their dirty clothes in your washer, and neither does your rig manager, so they don't care. They also don't provide any detergent for your coveralls.

If you are a veteran, expect some cocky hand that has been working there for year to ask, as inappropriately as possible, if you have PTSD. You will also probably encounter some discrimination based on your veteran status because they like to say that all veterans are lazy or "p-words" as one floorhand put it. You'll feel unwelcome the second you tell the crew you were in the service.

PRIOR MILITARY, AVOID THIS COMPANY!!!!! You are going through a huge change by getting out, and you will not do yourself or your family any favors by working for them for a few months before they leave you high and dry!!! As much as they talk big about "hiring veterans" remember that they also FIRE all of these veterans they hire when the going gets tough!!

    Advice to Management

Instead laying off based on seniority, lay off based on who has the most write ups. LEAVE VETERANS ALONE!! They don't need temporary big money just to be laid off in a few months after working. And teach the crews some respect, before you end up with ANOTHER EEOC lawsuit! Also, tighten up your HR personnel. They need to keep their promises and do what they say they are going to do.
