I worked at Paul Scherrer Institut full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    - Good salary by academic standards. - Access to a good network of academics

    Cons

The management are very condescending towards foreigners. Although, PSI is a very diverse institute when it comes to scientists, they still don't do any effort to communicate in English or help you with paper work. Their attitude is that you are in our country, and if you don't like it, then leave. The hiring of permanent staff is purely nationalistic to say the least. If you are Swiss or EU, you are welcome. Otherwise, after 2-3 years they will likely kick you out. A literally depressing place to work for. No social events at all. It is a good work place if you are middle aged and have kids, and expect to go home to a family. Otherwise, the area around the institute is bleak! Nothing to do during weekend that is within a reasonable commute.
