I worked at PayPal (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Some of the best engineers
    - Staying on top of cutting edge tech
    - Good campus food
    - Good work life balance
    - Everyone is accessible

    Cons

    - Some horrible engineering management
    - No future. No new products (which is why there is time to rewrite and update to cutting edge tech)
    - Questionable if some if the senior engineers are really capable of system design or if they really have skills necessary for engineering work. Many lack solid CS fundamentals.
    - Lot of politics
    - Low hiring bar
    - Pay is not competitive

    Advice to Management

Not sure what to say, but I think engineering management needs formal training on speech and basic skills on how to communicate with people. Also, there is no innovation. This company will fall if it doesn't innovate!

I worked at PayPal full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Good work/life balance for teams that do not affect PayPal's bottom line.
    - CEO is a great guy with a solid vision for the company.
    - Good perks. Free soda, lots of events, technology training courses.
    - If you can keep up with the high work demands, there is good upward mobility up to a certain point.

    Cons

    - If you work on one of the critical back-end teams, you can kiss your weekends goodbye. It's very common to see people in the office until 7, sometimes as late as 10 for a deployment hand-off to an India team.
    - Mediocre culture (perks != culture). Although overall there is diversity, individual teams hire people like themselves (diversity != inclusiveness)
    - Non-flexible work for engineers. They always assign more work than is feasible to complete. They expect people to work at a constant output all of the time.
    - Managers may ask you to do extra on top of your work, which can be rewarding for your career, but is mostly to help the managers look better in their fight to look good.
    - Because everyone is overworked, team members are too busy to train new hires.

    Advice to Management

Don't get caught up in the petty battles to impress your boss. Or, if you do, don't involve those working under you.

I worked at PayPal as a contractor (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Over my 20+ years of experience, I have not met with better team members than the ones I had the privilege to work with at PayPal. The managers I worked for were brave and audacious to allow senior engineers to experiment with cutting edge technologies (upon having tested the engineers capabilities).

    Cons

Unfortunately, PayPal is not like Google, Facebook, etc. in terms of employee compensation and benefits.
