I have been working at Peabody full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great benefits including very competitive compensation packages. These are the best people to work with and that includes the Executive Leadership Team. The CEO, Glenn Kellow, is very down-to-earth and communicative. We always know what's going on with the business which calms nerves in such a turbulent economy and during our Chapter 11 Bankruptcy. Peabody takes care of its employees!!

    Cons

The only downside I can find is that the building is in downtown St. Louis - we have to pay for parking. But, seriously, that's the only downside.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the good work with communicating with your employees.

I have been working at Peabody full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Peabody values their employees and is focused on providing a positive environment where employees can thrive even during the ups and downs of the coal industry. They listen to concerns from employees and take into consideration the voice of the employee base. Employee safety is paramount! The location is convenient, their is a great fitness center with a personal trainer and classes included in the membership fee. Health benefits are competitive and vacation time is generous. The Executive team has an open door policy and is interactive with the employees at town hall meetings and employee events. There is opportunity to advance in your role and Peabody makes sure you have the tools to succeed. The environment is collaborative and positive. Peabody employees are dedicated and work as a team. If you are looking for a place to work that you enjoy coming to every day then Peabody should be at the top of your list!

    Cons

The negative press around the coal industry in the recent years has definitely impacted the financial state of the company and at times the atmosphere since it seemed grim at times.

    Advice to Management

Continue to interact with employees at all levels. Stay connected with the concerns of the employee base through town halls, surveys and open discussions. Remain diligent about creating a strong financial portfolio. Just keep doing what you are doing!!!

Peabody is a strong company that has survived economic commodity swings for over 130 years. Management has developed a plan to ensure Peabody is sustainable for more years to come. Job security is not a concern.

    Cons

Though Peabody offers opportunities for advancement, it is challenging to take advantage of cross-functional opportunities.

    Advice to Management

Encourage management to establish mentoring/coaching relationships to better develop employees that show ambition and desire to move up the ranks.

    Advice to Management

Take care of your people first, then your people will take care of your customers.

    Pros

Overall the atmosphere is pretty positive. Management does a good job of soliciting feedback from employees at all levels of the organization and using that feedback to make informed decisions - whether it be flexibility in the workplace or ideas on special projects.

    Cons

Maternity leave benefits could be better although they are comparable to other U.S. companies.

    Cons

I walk to work so safety in downtown is sometimes a concern.

I have been working at Peabody full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Peabody has a talented workforce and gives you the opportunity to work on new and innovative projects. Company offers a competitive salary and generous time off package compared to other companies in area. Peabody places a strong importance on safety - whether in the corporate office environment or the operations. That makes you feel safe going to work each day. You get to work with a lot of great individuals who care about putting out a successful product. Members of the executive leadership team are very transparent and keep employees informed on business matters in a timely manner. You really get to touch many aspects of the business - even in a starting role. Company recently implemented pilot program of redistributed summer hours where employees may leave as early as noon on Fridays during the summer if work is completed. It was a great perk and helped with work-life balance. Work extra hours to get your work done Monday-Thursday and enjoy an afternoon off at the end of the week.

    Cons

Employees juggle quite a bit of work so if you aren't good with time management, you can feel as though you are continually behind.

    Advice to Management

A course or training program on the coal industry for those new to the industry would be a great addition to the on-boarding process.

I have been working at Peabody full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The pay is decent despite the long hours. Sometimes have decent bonus.

    Cons

Long hours coupled with forced overtime. Yes genuinely forced overtime. People that call in on forced overtime shifts are being placed on corrective action and having their jobs threatened. Despite being incredibly short staffed. Bouncing around in equipment/ night shifts. General poor morale.

    Advice to Management

Stop being so concerned with your production bonuses. I know it’s a dying industry but you’re still managing people, not robots. Treat your employees like people and your crazy turnover rate may decrease.

I have been working at Peabody full-time

    Pros

Favorable work environment and flexibility. Great vacation and holiday policy.

    Cons

Over elimination of certain benefits in recent years.

    Advice to Management

Continue to strive to listen to employee concerns in order to make Peabody a desirable place for employment. It is unfortunate but understood that tough times call for unpopular decisions, however there should be an understanding that over-elimination of benefits will make it difficult to retain talent and cost the company in the long run.
