I worked at Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Everyone is really nice and generally helpful. There are no performance reviews and so people are pretty relaxed most of the time. The firm cares a lot about employees and tries to make work fun. Most people are extremely talented.

    Cons

Work life balance can be tough with very long hours and travel--it depends a lot based on your direct manager. Some teams work 50 hours a week others work 80.

This is a place where people rarely get fired so there's some bad apples around that ruin the environment of the place. Promotions are uneven.

    Advice to Management

Make it easier for employees to get and give feedback. Also fire people that don't work---it's like poison to the rest of the employees to see people blatantly not working but being compensated at the same level.

    Pros

The people here are amazing. It's very much a tight knit family that extends beyond just working together. Compared to other firms in the industry, the work hours are humane and the pay is above average (especially for lower level employees).

They really expect alot of you right off the bat and you are encouraged to take on as much responsibility as you can handle.

    Cons

Slow growth trajectory. No correlation between performance and reward. A lot of micro-management. The design work is a little on the conservative side but that might not be a con to some.

    Advice to Management

Implement some form of performance/reward system to reward those who work hard or long hours. (Bonuses/raises tend to be even across the board).

    Pros

Design charrette organized, encouraged to voice your opinion, small enough to make a name for yourself. Great people.

    Cons

Scared to take design chances, will not let talent shine or run with projects, micromanaged to the point of insanity.

    Advice to Management

Have some decision weight taken off of managements shoulders, there are plenty of talented associates that should be allowed to stretch their legs.
