I have been working at Penn State Erie part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Getting the opportunity to work a variety of interesting projects on a day to day basis. Supportive bosses that do NOT micromanage.

    Cons

Honestly I have no cons. Working at this position has been nothing shy of an amazing opportunity for myself and all other employees.

    Advice to Management

    Stay more engaged with staff.

I worked at Penn State Erie part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

All student consultants who were hired know their stuff, so you could count on another consultant to help if you didn't know the solution to a problem a student/faculty member was having.

    Cons

Opening shifts were always hard to get to at 7:30 or 8:00 AM, but they were always easy because no students were awake to come get computer help. So this was a good time to do homework or whatever you needed to do.

    Advice to Management

Todd Say was one of the best managers I've had, he connected with us and knew that we were students there as well as employees, don't let him go and listen to him.

    Pros

Students are great, Erie has a small town feel, if you like that.

    Cons

LOTS of snow, very heavy workload for lecturers while still expecting tenure track levels of research. Turnover is very high among lecturers, pay is low, contract decisions are made late in the year and are very political.

I have been working at Penn State Erie full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The only pro is our amazing families and children.

    Cons

Low Wages, Expensive Benefits, TWO YEARS Before Benefits Kick In, Management

    Advice to Management

I work 40 hours a week year round, which is WAY more than most of the salaried employees, but I am labeled "part time" and therefore receive none of the perks. I do not get medical, vacation, sick, holiday, PTO, or any other benefit for TWO years. I will never be eligible for the tuition discount. This is why my Department at the Child Care Center has a VERY high turn over rate. The early childhood teachers are expected to have degrees, but we get paid crap and have no benefits. One would think an EDUCATIONAL institute would -- you know -- support education. It all starts in our formative years (ages 0-5). Yet, Penn State does not invest in early childhood education when they do not invest in their highly qualified staff. Furthermore, the director, treats everyone (staff and parents) with such disrespect. Parents complain to the teachers all the time about how rude she is. That is, when she bothers to be there. Our director works less than anyone I have ever known.

    Pros

Good pay, flexible hours, and once you've been on board for a while you have plenty of autonomy. If you have technical knowledge you should absolutely try to apply for this position while studying at Penn State Behrend.

    Cons

Kind of frustrating having Main Campus rule over every one and every thing. Sometimes you'll have a simple quick and cheap solution to a problem and will get ham stringed by University bureaucracy. Just the nature of the beast I guess.

    Advice to Management

Offer a bit more explanation to employees why certain restrictions or processes exist when someone gets caught up by them. Could ease some frustration.

I have been working at Penn State Erie full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great benefits. Great support (depending on the department you are in). Overall, people love working here and it is a great culture to be part of.

    Cons

There can be "red tape" to get through at times because it is part of such a large university system, and that can be frustrating.
