    Pros

Good pay and benefits and it had a family feel until financial problems took over.

    Cons

Financial problems in the company created a stressful situation. Didn't know from one day to the next if you had a job.

I worked at PennWest (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    - Great pay & benefits (vacation, flex, health & dental etc.)
    - It was a great place and respectful environment to be in, had a great team until the new hires came in

    Cons

    - Incompentent hires and reluctance to get rid of them
    - Vision and direction of company plays out like a broken record, spin the same message over and over again, eventually folks will tune out
    - work environment & culture is not the greatest since 2015

    Advice to Management

Get rid of the incompentent hires, hired one too many who add absolutely no value to the company.

I have been working at PennWest full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Used to be a great place to work under old management (3-4 years ago). Then things changed for the worst and new management (middle and above) does not care about employees, actively plays favorites and tries to discredit or displace the non-favorites. CFO, and other executives treat people as line-items, costs only, and not actual people...

    Cons

Too many rounds of layoffs, restructuring, reorganization, office shuffles, strategic plans, and miss-communication at all levels. Told your safe then you go, told your going, but not given clear timeline or direction, only to stay at the eleventh hour in a completely different position and role, and that is when you can get some kind of answer or response from management

    Advice to Management

Employees are more than G&A Costs - they are the heart of the business. treat them right, the company fixes itself.

    Pros

The co-workers and salary were good, as were the benefits.

    Cons

People get pigeonholed or blackballed too much in the various departments, managers tend to show favorites. Never had a chance to move forward despite upgrading my education.

    Advice to Management

Please stop pigeonholing and blackballing people, as well as playing favorites.

I worked at PennWest full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

This was a great company to work for. Under old management, leadership was strong and they cared about their employees. The company's values and culture aligned with mine. My career progressed and I loved my job. The company had a tightly knit family-oriented environment. And then things changed for the worse...

    Cons

After experiencing 5 years of lay-offs, organizational restructuring, constant change in upper management, and a series of unfortunate events. There was mis-management of capital investments for uneconomical field plays, an accounting scandal, and a bad decision not to hedge our oil production when the oil crisis hit.

Change management and communication suffered over the years and ultimately lead to low employee morale. The executive team didn't always have a cohesive strategic plan in changing the company for the better.

The management team for my department hired consultants to shape new procedures and policies, processes, and drastically cut costs. We got a new manager and they held department town hall meetings but other than that, did not deal with change management well. Team members would say hi to them in passing but never received a response. Supervisors would also be kept in the dark with very little communication. One on one meetings with the manager would result in no-shows. During periods of mass lay-offs, employees would be told that they would be safe... but eventually they were let go - including myself. If you are not sure, it's best not to say. We're in a major recession but let's be professional about things. People shouldn't be treated like this.

    Advice to Management

Don't forget that people are at the heart of a company. Without them, the company is nothing. I'm disappointed with how the company ended up and how employees were treated. They have greatly improved their balance sheet but I'm not sure how much longer this company will stay afloat.

    Pros

Pay and benefits were good to very good. Most staff great people to work with.

    Cons

Management agenda not in line with best interest of shareholders or employees. No interest in changing tactics for betterment of company. Culture of blame and paranoia has crept in over the years.

    Advice to Management

Need to stop pandering to analysts and short term view and create a sustainable plan.
