Pentagon/Washington D.C. - getting around - commute
Nov 20, 2014 -RecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Alhtough I cannot write here WHAT I do in the Pentagon, I can enlighten some about the commute those who are considering working in the "5-sider" as I sometimes call it. Although getting around here can sometimes be challenging, it has been wonderful to see the historical and cultural sights in a way that could never be done through internet and books. Despite the horrible traffic, there are alternatives to driving I-95. I have been able to live South of Quantico and ride the train into town. Crystal City is just two Metro stops from the Pentagon, and I get to sit and read books vs. anxiously gripping the steering wheel. It has been wonderful to go for a walk across the river for a lunch break and talk with Abe or touch the (Vietnam Memorial) wall on a bright sunny day, to smell the cherry blossoms in Spring, to walki right in to all those free, amazing museums. Living near a METRO station as some of my co-workers do is also a great option. They avoid living in center of town but are just 10 to 20 minutes from work. The Metro stops IN the basement of the Pentagon, so very convenient. Another alternative many opt for is the "slug line," basically sanctioned, organized hitch-hiking with complete strangers. There are websites that tell all about it. Because the I-95 (and other) HOV lanse have restrictions, drivers and passengers mutually benefit by riding together. A trip from Stafford (Hwy 610) to the Pentagon takes about 40 minutes. (My train trip and drive home takes about 1 1/2 hrs, but I like the regularity and easy-going-ness of it).
Cons
Although I dodge traffic for my commute, there are many times that you have to plan your life around traffic for other occaisions. If you live South as I do and, say, plan to go to Mount Vernon, you must allot for at least an hour or two delay either going North or going South. There is just NO WAY around getting stuck. Also, even if you plan for those times, there are often additional, unexpected delays. A single accident on I-95 (of the train hitting a deer) can make you significantly late. Also, because everyone gets delayed at different times, you may have to put off a meeting because one or more folks are late. (or, people allow themselves to be late because they know they can use the traffic excuse).

The Pentagon: Hard Work, Great Experience!
Dec 31, 2014 - Pentagon Police Officer in Washington, DCRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
I felt honored to have earned the assignment of Pentagon Police Officer, in the Pentagon Force Protection Agency. I learned ground fighting, protecting my weapon, and working as soon team.
Cons
It was very much like boot camp...language and all. My impression was that females were tolerated, but not preferred.

The Pentagon is the nerve center of DOD and the military services. It was exciting to be on the cutting edge of DOD and USMC policy, operations and culture. It was also gratifying to work alongside some of the best people in DOD and government.
Cons
The long hours and metro DC traffic!

Pros
It's a city within itself. You don't have to leave the building for anything. Depending on where you work it can be competitive but most workers are good to work with.
Cons
Transportation is a nightmare especially if commuting from Maryland. You go to work it's dark, you get home after dark.
