I have been working at Pentaho full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great benefits, ability to work from home when you need to, overall the smartest group of people I've ever worked with. Genuine ability to move jobs within the company.

    Cons

Not that crazy about the work itself that I'm doing, but hey, it's a job. The office is kind of packed with people since we're expanding so fast.

I have been working at Pentaho full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

-very smart/capable team from a tech perspective, including founders / early employees that are still here after 5-10 years
-great benefits and very open to working remotely / flexible schedules
-has small-company feel but the stability of a global enterprise (independent sub of Hitachi)
-opportunity for people interested in helping scale marketing/sales/product initiatives
-have seen increased staff promotion/advancement from within over the last few years

    Cons

-sometimes there is a need to 'make your own structure' - this is sometimes a challenge but can be an opportunity for those who are ambitious and patient
-there could be more delegation by VPs/Directors of longer term major responsibilities to their staff

    I worked at Pentaho full-time

    Pros

The technology space is exciting and the people that are drawn to the company are smart and hardworking.

    Cons

When you hire smart and hardworking people they aren't the type who have the patience to stay around with the poor management, poor behavior, and oblivious executives while marketing runs amuck. Everything roles up to marketing. Sales reports to marketing. Operation to marketing. He's hands are held by marketing. There are moratoriums on department change and growth. Turn over is high, even for SF tech.

    Advice to Management

    Find a moral compass.

I worked at Pentaho full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

There were some great people there - lots of great ideas and interesting perspectives. I learned a lot from them.

    Cons

Leadership was very weak. Micro-managing, politics, and personality-play made every day difficult. I did not feel supported, was frequently used as a pawn between conflicting managers, and watched my skill-set stagnate.

    Advice to Management

You have some very intelligent, very capable people. If you could see the bigger picture, trust people to do their jobs well, and look honestly at the numbers when using data to inform decisions, then you could see fantastic results. Also, remember that you're in a professional setting. Some of the behavior is beyond rude, its abuse!

    Pros

Smart leadership and C-levels with broad vision - led to the successful huge multiplier exit and acquisition by Hitachi.

    Cons

Marketing culture. Too much focus on wishy washy marketing nonsense - not enough focus on real use-cases, customer success, and sales.

    Advice to Management

Fix the marketing/inside sales culture, otherwise great

Lots of opportunity to move around and grow
Flexibility of a start-up with the stability of a larger company
    Flexible work schedule
People are all happy to be at work

    Cons

It's a place where you will have to be self-motivated to work hard
Little bits of office drama as any workplace would have

    Advice to Management

Make sure you keep the culture of a more intimate company, although the company is growing and changing.

I worked at Pentaho full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great place to start sales career

Decent base, great location, big data is sexy for future job opportunities in tech sales, recruiters will hit you up frequently

Fun team, good benefits, good training, in office snacks, drinks, etc

    Cons

You live and die based on your territory and account executive. The whole way they measure success for ISRs is completely upside down. It should be obvious to upper management when the top producing account executives are the ones that accept the lowest percentage of opportunities and vice versa. So hypothetically you could be supporting a less than successful AE that flips everything to an opportunity (this is good for you) to show his VP he has pipeline, but another ISR could be supporting Pentaho's top rep that covers NYC and only 20% of your meetings convert.

This is a very fair and honest assessment of the system, so no one should be surprised or angry at this. Just get the experience and move on once you can. There is a slight chance you may end up with a good territory and rep to work under as a few ISRs have (see LinkedIn) but most haven't (see LinkedIn)

    Advice to Management

I don't think you need any. You know what's going on and things are working for the bottom line. You got acquired and now just need to keep cruising. Thanks for the opportunity to work here.
