I worked at Pental Surfaces full-time

    Pros

Coworkers were nice and it is fun to look at huge granite slabs all day.

    Cons

Mouse droppings everywhere and tumbleweeds of human hair. Lack of respect for employees. Poor benefits. Chaotic structure.

    Advice to Management

Management? I didn't even know this place had a CEO until I had worked there for a few months. The owners are nice but they don't seem to run the place. I would challenge anyone to identify who was in "management" and who was just assertive enough to get stuff done.

My honest advice is to bring in a director of operations to run the non-sales aspects of the organization.

I worked at Pental Surfaces full-time

    Pros

Pental notified employees well in advance for scheduled events such as meetings and product knowledge events. They tried very hard to hired people with diverse backgrounds. It was clear they were trying.

    Cons

The management in all the locations did not work together well. There were discrepancies between different department managers regarding rules being followed and administered. Answers to questions about policy were sometimes vague.

    Advice to Management

Keep the gap between the amount of information being passed down to management and to employees under management as small as possible. Give all employees access to voice opinions respectfully.

I have been working at Pental Surfaces full-time

    Pros

Pental has a reputation of being a market leader is products, design and innovation. It is an exciting work environment in that creative input is more than welcomed. It is great to be part of a company that values their employees and is at the same time customer-centric.

    Cons

Sometimes rapid growth can create challenges that are not as rapidly addressed. This is a growing pain and the company is tuned into needs.

    Advice to Management

Continue to stay the course and embrace the team's creative input.

I have been working at Pental Surfaces full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Full benefits and health coverage paid in full by Pental. Friendly co-workers and fun environment to be around tile and slabs. The company is expanding it's territory and growing quickly which is a great thing to watch and be a part of. This also gives potential for current employees to advance in position and wage. Management has improved by adding on a Chief Operations Officer and Lead Sales Manager for all locations which has helped expedite solving any issues among departments or individuals. The owner is so busy that he can't sub-manage all departments, so this has been a great addition and benefited the quality of employment here.

    Cons

Most employees are required to work one Saturday a month in the showroom. There is higher turn over in certain departments due to low wages and high stress. Sometimes management is secretive about company developments and additions, which I understand, but then they don't tell anyone later about it and a majority of us feel like we're in the dark and surprised when changes that effect everyone happen. HR is not approachable and I don't feel comfortable going to them for anything, even though I've never had a personal problem with them.

    Advice to Management

Management should communicate more and clearly to their departments and give more frequent positive feed back. Pay all employees $15/hour or more -- not minimum wage. Underpaid employees don't feel appreciated and will leave, and high turnover causes stress on ALL departments. Hire competent employees too! Improve HR by hiring NICE and APPROACHABLE people.

I have been working at Pental Surfaces full-time

    Pros

My co-workers are the best - makes coming to work everyday enjoyable! I am not micro-managed, but there is always someone there to answer questions. Decisions are made quickly - no red tape to deal with. Low-stress environment. Working hours are respected - I don't get work-related phone calls after hours.

    Cons

The showrooms are open on Saturdays and most employees are expected to work one Saturday a month.

    Advice to Management

More open communication with all employees so that everyone knows about happenings and new projects. More positive feedback for daily jobs well done.

I have been working at Pental Surfaces full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Lots of interaction between teams. Ideas and suggestions are generally welcome, assuming you have a plan to carry them through. Management is approachable and is not intimidating. Support for sales team is excellent. Growth within the company is possible depending on the department you are in and the experience you have.

    Cons

Senior management can sometimes be slow to respond with internal issues. Sometimes can take multiple attempts for problem solving.

    Advice to Management

Continue to strive for streamlining communication between departments within the organization. Provide ongoing training for department leaders to better handle issues internally.

    Pros

The company takes in mostly entry level employees so that they may take advantage of paying them at a lower wage. On one hand this is a pro for someone who wants to become better educated in the stone and tile industry, but understand that this is as far as you should take this job. They will offer praise to make you feel like you are "contributing", but bottom line is how much can they make off of you and your hard work. If you want to work hard for a company and never recieve any type of compensation or promotion, this is the job for you. Take the knowledge and run, which is what almost ALL of the employees do. The turnover rate is TREMENDOUS (even in a bad economy) so if you are desperate for work look to their website as there is always someone voluntarily leaving their position. Pental has three different locations with beautiful showrooms, but behind the facade of money and grandeur is sadness from every employee. They will terminate your minimum wage position to remodel a bathroom in the finest of materials flown in from Italy. They do have company parties twice a year, but no one ever goes- and they are pot-luck.

    Cons

Communication at Pental is completely non-existent. Over the many years that I worked there it was the biggest issue that was never EVER solved. Everyone is ready to "pass the buck" onto someone else, and the higher paid employees tend to blame their mistakes on those who barely make minimum wage creating hostility in all departments. Total lack of respect. Those in upper management lack the education and knowledge to properly run a business (just because an employee starts in the ground floor of a company does not make them qualified to be a project manager). Pental refuses to compensate qualified individuals, therefore they either leave or are not considered for employment. If you have a degree, they will not employ you. The most depressing part of working there is to see the lack of respect and heart that the owner has for his employees. Its difficult to watch the extravagant events and parties they throw for their customers when you havent had a raise or performance review in years.

    Advice to Management

Have a heart. Try to remember what it was like to work for a company that listened and cared about their employee. Cut the loose ends, and refocus the direction of the company. Treat people respectfully, a happy employee works harder. Not every employee is a "bad apple", perhaps they are red delicious apples that have been soured in a depressing Pental basket.
