I worked at Pep Boys full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good place to work prior to the ownership change. Company mow lacks culture, and direction. No vision.

    Cons

Company only cares about making a quick profit no longer cares about it's associates.

    Advice to Management

Share some culture, and get a vision you can be consistent with for your associates.

I worked at Pep Boys full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Right place, right time, right attitude for quick promotions and decent pay increase. Laid back work environment. Almost impossible to be fired. Online training that's beneficial to increasing automotive knowledge.

    Cons

Bad employees are kept until they quit. Bad managers just get moved to a different store. No commissions or bonuses for retail. Cash for selling contests but never saw a store actually receive their winnings. Safety violations, harassment of all kinds, no regards to what they say in front of customers. Shady practices in the service department. Too much pressure to sell add-ons and beat previous years numbers. Poor morale. And if you rock the boat with new ideas or try to combat the bad stuff going on, yeah you will get canned. Workers too afraid to report to HR.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of bad managers or ones with no experience. Hire from outside if you have to. Appreciate and encourage hard workers. Care about the morale, not just your bonus. Don't complain about employees to other employees or in front of customers. You have a problem you take it to that employee. And be inclusive with everyone you manage. Get to know all your employees, not just the ones who want to go have a beer with. Be present and lead by example.

I have been working at Pep Boys full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Good job stability...lenient with attendance

    Cons

Inconsistent hours...a lot of micro managing...TERRIBLE raises

    Advice to Management

If you want to keep good employees then you can't just give a .25 cent raise after a year of employment. Give your raises based on how good of a worker someone is...not just a blanket raise...especially when it is only .25 cents

I have been working at Pep Boys full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    your paycheck is commision based.

    Cons

The commission rates have decreased substantually. It is no longer competitive to work as a service advisor at pep boys. You will have much more success with a company that care's about its employees. This place is greedy.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of your budget cut bonuses and give back to the techs and service advisors. assistant svc mangers and up make more than enough money to support a family, stop being greedy and pay everyone else better. i have seen many good techs and advisors come and go due to poor compensation that continues to get worse.

    Pros

Pays well they seem to want to pay people as long as you a good employee. I ever really had a salary issue

    Cons

Corporate way does not always work, and to slow to notice it. To much little things to do that mean nothing at the end of the day. Take care of customers is priority they preach, but don't apply

    Advice to Management

Run the store from the store not in the office

Pay the techs a fair wage, doesn't seem fair techs are working hard for the same amount as the guy at McDonald's making their lunch.

I have been working at Pep Boys full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Fair amount of vacation, access to certifications, many opportunities to gain experience, many locations to choose from, different lines of business to learn

    Cons

Low wages, poor hours, not enough focus on employee retention, old equipment, slow upper management response times when issues arise

    Advice to Management

Offering more competitive wages and better raises would help to reduce turnover. The lack of experienced employees puts extra strain on management and causes customers to lose trust in a business that always has someone new. In my time at Pepboys I have seen numerous team members leave due to better offers from competitors and no longer wanting the additional stress of constantly training new hires and picking up the slack of poor staffing. Additionally in my time as a manager I found it very difficult to hire good talent as the starting wages were not comparable to the locations I was told to try to recruit from. Knowledgable and experienced individuals know how much is a fair amount to ask, employers should be willing to offer that if they want to build a good team.
