I have been working at Pepperdine University full-time

    Pros

Very friendly people. Job stability. It's easy to get good experience since you'll be the only one managing what a team does at schools like UCLA or USC.

    Cons

Pepperdine underpays and is known for not negotiating once you're hired. Don't expect any more than a 3% maximum "merit-based" increase even if you get a better title or if they tack on more responsibilities. You're better off switching jobs every 1-2 years here if you want to earn enough to keep up with inflation.

    Advice to Management

Don't be afraid of doing 360 reviews for all your management. You'll never understand why employees are leaving you if you don't ask them while they're still there.

I have been working at Pepperdine University part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I have worked in the MBA program for two years now. Overall, the other instructors are intelligent, high quality individuals. The department chairs are also good people.

    Cons

For the most part, the students in the MBA program are terrible. Pepperdine has several MBA/MS programs that are all geared towards students who are extremely young with little to no work experience. Because of this, the university cannot attract the high caliber students that other top end schools can attract. The students are immature, disrespectful, and quite needy. A typical class involves several students holding side conversations while an instructor attempts to give a lecture. These same students then complain to the administration when they receive poor grades. The administration is there to pacify the students and to keep the money rolling in, so it overturns poor grades to keep students happy. How does this build a quality program when poor performance is rewarded?

Also, students continually ask why they cannot find jobs post graduation. Well, this is likely because the MBA that you just earned is not worth the paper that it is printed on because students do not have any meaningful work experience to justify employment. Don't believe me, look at the recruiting stats.

    Advice to Management

If you want to build a strong program, stop holding students' hands and make the program competitive. Pepperdine will never be more than a 3rd tier school if this does not happen.

I have been working at Pepperdine University full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

One of the most beautiful spots in So Cal; caring, professional work environment; good-quality, hard work is rewarded with leadership opportunities; students are fantastic, engaged, and eager to learn.

    Cons

You have to be prepared to work at non-profit level salaries. They are definitely fair, and the benefits are great, but they do not rise much over time.

    Advice to Management

Love your focus on keeping and training employees for the long term and the personal and family supportive environment you foster. Some employee workspaces could be upgraded and modernized. Continue and increase focus on updating and improving technology systems, both for employees and students. Some of our enrollment and records management systems in particular seem clunky and outdated in comparison to other universities. Welcome efficiencies could be achieved for staff and students.

    Pros

This job is very flexible with your school schedule, you have many options to choose from in regard to which GA position is of interest to you. The employers here are personable, and helpful.

    Cons

The biggest con for a GA position is that your shift is predominately sitting a computer screen. For my particular GA position, some of the work could feel redundant.
