I worked at Perry Ellis International full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Exposure to the fashion industry
    - Work with talented, friendly and amazing co-workers

    Cons

    - Always thinking about saving two cents vs employees and new ideas
    - Old-school mindset about business
    - Departments across the whole company are understaffed and underpaid
    - Bonuses & raises come at one time of the year, no exceptions
    - Dress code
    - Employees are not cared for
    - Stress-levels are crazy

First off, Nike Swimwear is not on Nike's campus or under Nike's leadership.

If you're looking to break into the fashion/apparel industry in Portland, look elsewhere. The worst thing about Perry Ellis International (PEI) was leadership, aka the old and new CEOs, aka father and son. They are not digital-first CEOs and think that the internet ruined their strategy for success.

Budgets are razor thin in the company BUT leadership expects the world. Co-workers frequently quit but never get replaced. Why? In leadership's head I'm sure it's something to the effect of, if we can save a year's salary and work will still get done, let's do it. Who cares about employee satisfaction or stress.

Leadership needs to get rid of that ridiculously old Jantzen canopy outside the Nike Swimwear building and throw up a Swoosh. Then take some money and make the work space live and breath Nike to inspire staff.

    Advice to Management

Doesn't matter because leadership doesn't care about their employees feedback.

    Pros

The employees were nice. They appreciated me more than management. Decent working environment.

    Cons

Position was a solo Desktop Support gig, being managed from the Miami, Florida headquarters. This means I had the place all to myself, with no one to back me up locally. Even though I served my clients expediently and with great care, my management team did not seem to value me, nor give me the appropriate Kudos to make me want to stay there. The pay was low.

    Advice to Management

Maintain strong relationships with all of your support staff, especially the remote guy who doesn't have the benefit of working with a team face to face..... Especially that guy.

    Pros

Working with many talented young people
Good benefits (401k, medical, paid holidays and birthday, health initiatives)
    Looks good on resume

    Cons

Your voice is not heard. The higher ups make all the decisions yet their opinions are incredibly outdated. One person in general was very rude to the point of it being considered verbal abuse.

    Advice to Management

    Be NICE.

    Pros

exposure to many customers, countries, product & approval processes. nice people

    Cons

run like a jv sports team in high school. catty leaders of divisions, no growth-- don't even think about asking- it means you are threatening someones job as opposed to attempting to grow your role and overall business contributions. no communication between departments, strange full staff meetings where nothing is accomplished

    Advice to Management

stop with the family first mentality.. put appropriate talented people in the right jobs. promote people... sounds like shocking thing to do..

    Pros

Friendly environment. People are pleasant to your face.

    Cons

They are understaffed, always late on development because of it, and pile more work on you without increasing your salary year after year. The LA office is run by people who guide you on your development but if it's wrong for the company and the CEO sees it and disagrees, those same people will behave as though they were not involved in guiding you, and you could lose your job over it. They also pay 20% below average in LA for same roles. A few people in the office are clearly overpaid compared to their efficiency to lead.

    Advice to Management

Be accountable and own your decisions as you "lead" your direct reports.

I worked at Perry Ellis International full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I received a very strong foundation in product development while at this job. Working with overseas and my sales team counterparts also was helpful for future opportunities.

    Cons

Although a public company, this company is run like a mom and pop private company. The benefits are lack luster and management is not strong. I had one of my worse experiences in all of my career at this company. My boss was terrible to me and all of my co workers and after years of complaints, she we finally let go.

    Advice to Management

Pay more attention to your employees and what makes them happy and more productive in the work place.
