I have been working at Pet Food Express full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great sense of teamwork and respect. Strong morals guide corporate decision-making, not investor value. Being privately held is an great setup. Company is in the perfect size range and is growing rapidly.

    Cons

Pay is somewhat lower than market, but still competitive. Reliance on internal promotion means some people are not qualified for their roles. Somewhat hard to integrate and most employees are here for life.

    Advice to Management

Continue growing rapidly, and expand while the opportunity is present. Don't dilute company values, but expand at the fastest pace that protects who we are.

    Pros

You are given ample training on the products you are going to be selling. In the beginning it is difficult to absorb everything, but with the PT sheet per shift that you need to do, eventually you get it.

Sue Tasa rocks! She really does.

    Cons

As stated before, be very careful what you say and do. Your coworkers are often encouraged to report on your actions.

Corporate says they are going after the big box stores, but then you are to price match anyone (brick and mortar stores). The little shop down the street with a 1/10th of the inventory has it cheaper, beat their price by a dollar. But we are not trying to drive them out of business.

    Advice to Management

You have a bunch of Yes Men working in the Store Management (AM's included) positions. If Corporate were to say that employees needed to shave their heads, most of them would probably have it done before their shift ends.

You have cameras in all the stores, perhaps you should watch them more to see what is actually happening. You will probably see the full timers huddled into the offices more than anything else, while the part timers are doing everything.

    Pros

    Good employee discount, cute dogs

    Cons

A lot of Micromanagement, lack of cohesion

    Advice to Management

Treat employees with respect. The company wants to come across as a Mom and Pop shop, but this is far from the truth. Management worries about the numbers so they will receive their monthly bonus. Stop tryingnto sell things to customers that they don't need.

Raise the base pay for sales associates

I have been working at Pet Food Express part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

It holds good values and trains employees extensively. Working here will truly benefit your pet because you will learn SO much. Awesome products, you get paid to pet dogs. They don't drug test before hiring.

    Cons

They "encourage" that you have a voice and share opinions but it's a trap. At least at the store I worked for. They promote a lot of incompetent employees and neglect the hardworking ones. I had many managers who didn't know what they were doing.

    Advice to Management

Give your employees more credit and higher wages. Stop using the "Do as I say, not as I do" method.

    Pros

Great bosses who care about workers from mid-management to the top
    Good pay
Great community of workers and managers who care about their job

    Cons

Get wrapped up in pushing new products
Spread the work staff too thin sometimes in busy locations

I worked at Pet Food Express full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

I got to learn a lot about pet food nutrition, help people keep their pets happy and healthy. See animals everyday.

    Cons

It is a retail job. Dealing with customers who are having a bad day is never fun. Minimum wage is hard to live on.

    Advice to Management

My advice to management would be to take more value in the employees because everyone wants to be happy to come to work, not to just pick up dog poop.

I worked at Pet Food Express part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I love dogs, so it was great being able to see and interact with all the dogs who came into the store. It was generally pretty easy to get my shifts to be scheduled around my school schedule.

    Cons

Given that job can be extremely taxing from both a physical and mental perspective (dealing with irate customers, lifting massive bags of dog food onto/off shelves, cleaning up the constant mess in the dog washing station), the mediocre pay often made the job feel less great than it should have.

    Advice to Management

Pay more attention to your employee's wellbeing. Work to create an environment in which interpersonal conflicts can be quickly resolved, as opposed to letting them fester into something much worse.
