I worked at PetEdge full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    It has indoor plumbing available

    Cons

The company is on its way out of business. It has been on a steady decline for years. It was all started by the former Executive team. They were terrible at their job and did nothing but create fear and a hostile environment for the entire sales team. In the end, their continuous manipulation lies and cheating ways caught up to them. The entire team has basically turned over but the damage has been more than done! And that actually falls on the owner and CEO, Andy. He just wasn't smart enough to figure out what was really going on in his company. Even after HR received numerous exit interviews from many of the same people who have posted on Glass Door about what was happening during their employment. This was always puzzling because he's a control freak and wants details on everything. Would you believe he still spends his time dictating what color is chosen for a new product and what the subject lines on marketing emails should read? The people in those roles become very frustrated because he actually ruins a lot of things and prevents them from doing the job they were hired to do. Over the past 4-5 years he has been responsible for bringing in over $5,000,000 worth of product that didn't or won't ever sell. (Patento, Blackwood, Insect Shield) to name a few. The Insect Shield product was the worst of them all. It contains the ingredient permethrin. Anyone who has a computer can look up the potential dangers permethrin can have on a cat. Why would anyone that has a cat allow these items in their homes for their dogs? I mean, I kind of hate cats too but I wouldn't want to see them harmed in any way. Oh, that's right, your fake vet that you pay as a consultant says it isn't so. Give us a break! They say what you want because you paid them money to do so.... These were all things that many within the company were against. This has put the company in a very poor financial situation where they have had to change banks three times in the last 15 months and are about to do it again next month. They are on credit cut off with more than half of their vendors both internationally and domestically. They recently decided to stop purchasing national brand items as a "strategic" initiative but everyone knows it is because they do not have any money. NONE! They even went as far as to try and sue the software company whom they purchased the new system the entire company uses because their sales are dismal. The amusing part about it is that it was the lack of preparation along with the owner’s constant direction of “hurry up” during the implementation of the system that is the primary reason it doesn’t work for their business model. But he allowed the former Executive team to dictate and be in charge and ignore the feedback from the sales team and here they are. PetEdge lost the case. Look up (Petedge, Inc v. Garg, 1:15-cv9609-GHW S.D.N.Y Feb.10 2017) if you would like to read about it. The HR department is laughable and utterly useless. Often times if you go down to the HR office you will find a small child wearing head phones watching an iPad in the corner of the room. Sometimes they will be alone sitting right next to the HR computers, personal files and possibly medical files of the employees. Does anyone know if a non-employee should have access to personal employee files or is that illegal? One of their primary responsibilities of the HR team is to post positive reviews on Glass Door to try and improve what is the perception of a 1 star company at best. But as you will notice when you read any that offer more than 2 stars that they do seem fake. Take one of the last ones for example, it reads stable company but within the comments they even admitted they hoped the new VP would change morale. So which is it, being in the financial situation you are is far from stable…and why are you hoping morale changes? Summer hours are an absolute lie. and they neglected to mention that there is a catch of course. Some departments are not included and if you are in sales you need to be trending or over 100% of your quota. The only problem is you can't hit your quota and if you do bring in enough sales the company has no stock or money to purchase stock so you never can meet that stipulation. Not to mention that the quota's have skyrocketed as they've continued to lose sales associates and combined the territories. Go to their website and try to order some items. See for yourself! If you do happen to find something you like then find a local discount store/yard sales where you can buy those same items for much, much cheaper. Or better yet, try other online sites. This is where they are putting all their efforts to try and avoid a bankruptcy these days which is only further hurting the local independents that helped build the company. Bottom line, you aren't even capable of coming up with lies at this point! The CFO is on borrowed time and everyone knows it. They have clearly stated too many people that as soon as the kids graduate from their current schools they are moving down south. So they are just trying to keep the company afloat until they leave but really don't have a long term perspective or well-being in mind what so ever. His staff within AP/AR is absolutely horrendous! They base all their decisions on their current mood and if you are a sales rep that doesn't get along with that team you will hear one answer and one answer every time. “No” They will then penalize your customer as well which hurts you trying to capture and grow sales. They are some of the most disgruntled, unprofessional people you could ever meet. No one within the department possesses any type of accounting experience, let alone an actual degree. They often send accounts to collection because they didn't understand and apply the payments incorrectly. Imagine that, your client pays their bill on time but they send them to collections saying they didn't. You then actually have to spend your time proving them wrong and then apologizing to the customer. And since they've struggled with banks so much as of late, they have begun manipulating credits and returns to lie to the bank and try to not make it look so bad. They are currently holding all credits before they process them. This is an attempt to try and hide the fact that their cheap China products suck and they have hundreds of returns and damages every month. All the while the customer has to jump through hoops and call back three times to find out what is going on. The sales team (PEDS) is the worst it has ever been. They have no real leadership what so ever! They are left to fend for themselves in an environment that has a closed door policy. Each day the so called management has them stand in a circle and belittle and bullies them on everything that they are doing wrong. You aren't allowed to give negative feedback and if you do you become a target and things just become even more hell for you. There is a "MAJOR EGO" issue going on in there right now! Not to mention that they've lost over 30+ years-worth of experience when their long time sales associates recently chose to leave the company. They continue with their style and approach of bullying and intimidation. Personal feelings and opinions will override any talent or actual sales. The territories and channels are a joke! Why does Ecommerce share? Can't you just admit you are trying to keep any profits because Ecommerce is basically the only revenue you are seeing these days? What once made sense has spiraled out of control and now it's a favorite's game. The associates who are liked the most get the accounts with any life left. Anyone that is new or not liked on a personal level does not stand a chance and will then be stuck in a very toxic environment where you can't make any money. Think Mr. Burns on the Simpsons and how he treats people. I’ll finish up with their Dealer website. This has been and will always be a thorn in their side. It crashes pretty consistently, has limits on the number of products it can hold and often times causes more harm than good. It's been up and running for over 4 years yet they still can't get the pricing to reflect their current sales and promotions. Use their seasonal "Pre Book Sale" for example. Anytime they upload that pricing it becomes live on the website. And since all they do is sell the same items year round the customers see and can get lower pricing just because the PE - IT team can't figure out how to properly maintain the data. I think they refer to that as an ID-10-T issue. The worst part about it is that IT blows their complaints off because they are busy playing video games on their phones and gossiping with the sales support team. All the while the sales reps constantly have to deal with the upset customers who experience technical issues while trying to shop online. This ultimately causes them to lose out on sales and commissions. It's a vicious cycle that has gone on since the minute they went live with their new system back in 2013.

    Advice to Management

Accept the fact that you are in over your head. You are not your Father and cannot run a business this large. You are a rich kid that got daddy's company and yet still failed! You have allowed your company to lose some of the most talented people it will ever see. These were people who cared about PetEdge and didn't view it as just a job. Now all you have is a bunch of employees with no personal attachment and no pride in what they are doing. Each and every one of them will take the first offer they can get to escape that place! I know this because several of them have used me for a reference and also asked me about any openings with my new employer. There is no way you will ever hire any talented sales people moving forward. All they will have to do is ask to look back at the team's attainment for the past 3 years. They will clearly see that this company is ruined. Let's face it, you will NEVER solve your out of stock problem as it has been around for over 14 years and you will more than likely be forced into selling to avoid bankruptcy. And what is it with you and hiring consultants? Let the damn people you hired do the job! Also, you absolutely need to get rid of your outside sales team. They are utterly USELESS!! U-S-E-L-E-S-S Are you not smart enough to go back to all the notes and pipelines they gave you to see how pitiful of a job they are doing? Is your butt not covered in soot from all the smoke that has been blown up it by them? I never wanted to believe the stories about you and how you were but I think we all saw what reality was once your long time Executive assistant left. It's more than apparent that she was the glue that kept this place going and when she left you were exposed! I'll finish by saying if you are going to continue to attend the trade shows can you at least buy some matching suits and dress the part of CEO? This isn't the yacht club that you are visiting. PS - Pre Book has become a joke and you need to get rid of it! It's unfair to force your reps to work extended hours just to fake a number. And why would your customers want to pre-order merchandise that they carry year round? Does it really make sense that you are you selling it to them on sale when they are buying at full price the rest of the year?

    Pros

Special summer work hours for salaried employees (1/2 day Fridays, provided your work is done) are very much appreciated. The Cummings Center location is very convenient. Our current HR Staff is terrific and I cannot recommend the current VP of IT highly enough. The number of long time, dedicated employees speaks to the company's ability to attract and retain talent. I am hopeful that changes to the Senior Sales Management team in the past six months will improve morale in that department.

    Cons

I would like to see a larger 401 K match.

I have been working at PetEdge full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great co workers.......................... Nice location, parking. Pretty view. Some good places to each.

    Cons

Lack of trust. Higher ups are blind to see what's going on. Doesn't listen to the little people that care about having a job.

    Advice to Management

You got rid of some of the people that shouldn't have been let go on 6/1, there are atleast 4 sales reps that should have been left. Sales are down for the SALES department are NOT living up to what they tell customer's. They promise but can't deliever. That's only to make the numbers each month! Open your eyes its your SALES REPS that on paper numbers look great but after you need to see why orders are cancelled. They can't. Deliever what they promise. And they double customer's orders to make numbers. Also, your HR team the head of HR sucks, she is a miserable person that does NOT belong at this company. She makes her owns rules for us but SHE DOESN'T FOLLOW THEM. Just for she's HR she thinks she is untouchable. She is useless!!!!!!

    Disapproves of CEO

I worked at PetEdge full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I guess there's a little bit of everything in Cummings Center. And it's close to the train. PetEdge doesn't have a single redeeming quality, though.

    Cons

Everything. Pay is below market value. Medical benefits are OK but really expensive. The vacation policy is laughable. Paid holidays are virtually non-existent. And I can't imaging a more inept, underqualified, or overmatched CEO (but that's one if the many, many problems with family-run businesses).

PetEdge is one more terrible decision away from being forced to lock the doors for good. They closed the east-coast DC some time ago, so now everything ships out of Reno (even though most of their customers are in the east coast). So a groomer who was used to placing an order and having it in a day or two now has to wait over a week and pay more for shipping. This company is a mess.

However, if you do accept a position at PetEdge (which you absolutely shouldn't) and if you manage to make it a few years (which is doubtful, because I don't think the company will be around that long), you'll probably be laid off at some point. And when you are, you won't get a dime for severance, no matter how long you've been with the company, as they don't give severance packages. But what makes it even better is that you won't even have medical coverage through the end of the month...PetEdge cancels your insurance on midnight the last day you're employed there.

All this, while the CEO has the gall to drive around in a Porsche and tell everyone how great everything's going and how bright the future is at the completely unnecessary monthly company meetings. So unless you're on the verge of losing your house or something, if you interview for and are offered a job at PetEdge, do yourself a favor and do not under any circumstances accept it.

    Advice to Management

Guys, this company's been barely scraping by on life support for years...you're not innovative, you're hemeraging money, your competition offers better products, lower prices, better customer service, and faster shipping, and you have absolutely no idea how to treat your employees...just pull the plug and let her die with at least SOME dignity already.

    Cons

With padded you're not an account manager your glorified customer service rep you're not allowed to do anything without permission and your chain to a tiny little cubicle for 8 to 12 hours a day
During pre-book you're made to stay after hours and not allowed to leave sometimes 10 11 o'clock even if your accounts are open they want you to stay and try to make money
If you're thinking of joining Petedge Believe what you read it's all true

    Advice to Management

Come on Andy start looking at what's going on you had a great company wants I think HR another people keep you in the dark you need to open up and look at former employees exit interviews and read them and see what they're doing to people they can't deny you if you're fired

I worked at PetEdge full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    They have windows and doors.

    Cons

Great Company to work for if you’d like to go back to kindergarten and enjoy abuse. Some great people work here but the entire management team are lying uncaring tyrants who haven’t a clue what they are doing in any department and know that they are about to go out of business so only care about there own agendas. All the posts you see here are 100% true except the ones that are fake posted by the HR department and if you’d like to know about anyones private medical records or information in someones file just ask and they’d be happy to share if they can find the time between making up laws and policys.
If your thinking about working, buying or selling to Petedge you should think again. They lie to there customers, don’t pay vendors and have no money so should be out of business very soon. The owner took this company over from his father and has no idea what he’s doing. He’s completely controlled by the people he puts in charge and if there’s someone that any company would never hire, they should apply here and they’d be running this company. The have awful insurance, one week vacation, minimal holidays and a closed door policy. The HR department is just a unprofessional joke run by the same guy that runs accounting which is a even bigger joke. They can’t keep a single staff member because mangement here are the most abusive, fake and nasty people you’ll ever meet but get away with doing anything they want because they are protected. The Development department does a great job of developing rip offs of other companies designs. The sales department is a complete disaster with the only guy who knew what he was doing and inspired people just left and replaced by yelling, bulldog, egomaniac bipolar dictators, who do nothing but yell at people all day to do the job that they don’t know how to do themselves. The most experienced sales person just left after being tortured by the new management team and everyone in sales is actively looking to get out of prison and does nothing all day but tell horror stories about what this once good company has become. Upper management here just walks around asking people for directions to the bathroom and hides in the office doing jigsaw puzzles. The call center looks like closing hour at a bar with a bunch of sad misfits waiting for someone to turn out the lights and put them out of there misery. The support team kuss, swear and fight the entire day and look utterly confused. The inventory Department could care less and is more concerned with going to lunch than ordering product. Not that it would matter since the company is cutoff from almost every vendor anyway. Management who runs this department just grumbles at people all day, bad mouthing everyone else in the company and saying how hard their job is, while upper management walks around smiling at people all day and wondering where they are and how they got here. The IT department has a bunch of people who just sit around all day talking about what a mess the company is and gossiping and taking bets about when it will be out of business, while management who runs it come and go as they please, and while they seem to know what they are doing but have a what’s the point everyone here is stupid so why should I bother look on there face. The only department that seems to run well is marketing that is run by the only sane management left in the company who actually treat people with respect. But what good is marketing for a company that has no product in stock to market and should be marketing a “going out of business” sign.
No improvements will happen here as long as the owner is here. The owners never met a bad decision that he didn’t like, and on the rare occasion where he’ll actually talk to someone in his own company he’ll nod his head, say he’ll look into it and a hour later forget the conversation ever happened. He just keeps putting new people in charge and each one is worse then the one before and just when you think it can’t get any worst, it does. This is the worst company you could ever come work for and good luck finding anyone to say otherwise. The best thing you could do is prey for the people who work here and hope that they make it out alive before the for sale sign goes up on the door.
