I have been working at PetPeople full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Family owned, and the company truly cares about animals. Lots of great opportunities to travel if you want to help set up stores or train. Lots of great community events you get to go to.

    Cons

Company is growing quickly and has some growing pains in the communication department. The company also has new corporate leadership, and while smart and nice, they are starting to crack the whip a bit more on the sales side of things.

    Advice to Management

We definitely need to keep growing and performing, but be careful of pushing things like ADS too hard as you will lose the passion of the people who make Pet People who we are. Customers only come to our stores because of the employees not because of the products necessarily.

I have been working at PetPeople full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Growing company, so easy to move up in the company. Upper management easy to work with. Get to pet dogs all day. Regular customers become like family/friends. Very relaxed environment, even though it’s hard work.

    Cons

Communication from Home Office is suffering due to rapid growth, although the new CEO is trying really hard to improve. Overall technology in the stores are a bit outdated. Sometimes it feels like home office doesn’t listen to the wants/needs of stores.

I have been working at PetPeople full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Positive work environment all from upper management to store level. You get to pet dogs all day and regular customers are like family and new customers appreciative of our help. Growth opportunities for those who work hard and display the core values. Owners and DMs are supportive, the company is growing big but still maintain small company feel. Contests and incentives for employees that are really fun and rewarding....

    Cons

Communication with home office can sometimes be difficult due to fast growth. New CEO is helping home office and stores catch up with how to improve in this area though! Growing pains are to be expected with the growth that’s accruing. Work load can be a lot and if not delegated and prioritized right can cause stress. Some systems in operations are time consuming and need changed so it isn’t so stressful in store level....

    Advice to Management

keep listening to employees like you have been. Whether it’s positive or negative feedback. Keep perfecting the systems to take workload off employees and put us in a position where focus is training, employee happiness, and customers. Look into creating a training program for SMs to step into different and growing roles. and work on more flexibility with the store manager hours. I love this company and seeing the direction...

I worked at PetPeople part-time for less than a year

    Pros

Flexible hours Plenty of resources to learn from in case the twelve weeks of training wasn't enough

    Cons

Company tends to make a lot of false promises when it comes to moving up or advancing in general Management comes up with their own individual rules which often results in miscommunication between coworkers and an overall unpleasant work environment

I worked at PetPeople full-time for more than 3 years

      Pros

The Training is thorough, the products are good quality, the hours aren’t bad for retail. You get to know the customers closely and you get to see a lot of pets. They give a lot to the community and rescues.

      Cons

No matter what they try to say, it’s high pressure sales. You have to hit sales goals or risk write ups. They set it up as a very ethical company with high values, but it’s all just for show, not something they practice. They use write ups to get rid of associates not making sales goals rather than trying to improve performance. They have a 12 week training program but don’t give hours for it, just telling the managers...

      Advice to Management

Follow your core values if you are going to preach them. Stop overworking and burning out your staff. Give part time benefits and better pay so you can keep part timers. Then hire more part timers and less full timers so you can use the same hours but have 3 closers every night to staff your busiest time, recover the store, and combat call offs. Figure out a strategy to directly compete with competitors like bark...

      Cons

      Advice to Management

This company is amazing, makes you feel important, and provides lots of education but the amount of training that is required for a lower paying job can be frustrating.
