I worked at PetSmart full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Paycheck every week. 15% store discount. Flexible hours. Company normally provides a lot of food through the year but some stores vary.

    Cons

Your position doesn't matter they will have you doing all kinds of crazy things you never expected. You'll lose faith in humanity after dealing with customers in most departments.

    Advice to Management

Don't hire new associates and pay them more than the associates that have been there 2 or more years and expect nobody to find out.

I have been working at PetSmart part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Seeing sweet animals and customers are pretty friendly

    Cons

The managers at my store all seem to have an attitude and act like your stupid or that they are better than you. They also do zero training what so ever. Expect you to know everything and throw you in on your first day

    Advice to Management

Don't be so snarky. GET WALKIE TALKIES FOR CASHIERS. Actually train your employees

I have been working at PetSmart full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great benefits and they are moving back to better training, you get to interact with animals all day

    Cons

At this point training depends on your store team. If you're lucky enough to get full time(only management now to my knowledge) you MUST have open availability. Non-negoitable, I've had associates I've worked with for 10+ years fired over it. With the new owners, they are still finding their footing with P&Ps. Otherwise, I would recommend. Wouldn't have stayed as long as I have and I have life long friends because of it.

I have been working at PetSmart part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Majority of customers are happy when they come in, since people enjoy pets. Get to play with furry little buddies. Opportunities for advancement abound in most cases as long as you show up on time and work hard. Sure this varies by store, but generally not a problem getting days off.

    Cons

Management always pushing to get more work done to higher standards in less time. In short, the labor budgets (set by corporate based on sales forecasts or something) are a bit too lean to maintain employee sanity. And the usual corporate doublespeak where we are "customer focused" and a "lean company". Pick one - good service or good labor margins.

    Advice to Management

Ease up on the labor margins a bit to keep employee stress lower, morale and retention higher, which would lead to improved customer experience.

I have been working at PetSmart full-time

    Pros

A steady decent paying job with typically respectful peers and supervisors. Working with animals is awesome and it's a decently paced busy work environment.

    Cons

Customers can be pretty bad. Corporate goals are pretty bad. Sometimes it's like corporate wants you to fail, but you usually get it figured out.

I have been working at PetSmart part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

It's a great place for those who love animals and enjoy interacting with pets and pet parents. I'm very fortunate to have an excellent management team that makes going to work a pleasure.

    Cons

It's a physically demanding job, especially because (some) stores don't have enough hours to schedule sufficient staff. The pay is adequate, but should be higher based on the demands of the job. It's not a typical retail gig.

    Advice to Management

At store level, my management team is excellent. At corporate level, some stores (especially ones with the highest sales in an area) need more labor hours to ensure excellent customer service. The pay scale and benefits for part-timers is also not the best.

    Pros

    Good amount of overtime

    Cons

New management doesn't care much about tenured staff

    Advice to Management

Make a position that can be a liason with the associates and management on the level of a steward.

I worked at PetSmart full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Insurance, 401k, Workman's comp, PTO, stability, always have clients (especially in higher volume stores), can make money if you work hard

    Cons

Management isn't always great, training for becoming a groomer isn't enough, lots of policies

    Advice to Management

As a groomer, it's nice to not have to groom without a net. Petsmart provides insurance, Workman's comp, 401k and pays for a dogs injury if it happens in your care. My major issue was the streamline of new policies coming down from corporate just about every day. Trying to keep up with all of them and trying to make sure employees follow the sometimes ridiculous expectations they think you can do with only 2 hands. I think better upper management and more communication between corporate and stores would make them great. It is a fun place to work, and you meet AMAZING people, but it is extremely hard work especially in the salon on a Saturday. CRAZY!!
