I worked at PetSmart part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

If you're working here, chances are you love animals. You're basically paid to pet them all day.

    Cons

Working the night shift meant you didn't get to leave until everything was in place.

I worked at PetSmart full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Plenty of options that smaller companies cannot offer: large scope projects, business trips around the country, collaborate with other large brands and third party agencies, etc.

    Cons

Extreme stress in high-demand work, low job security when some degree of layoffs occur every other year, very little room for growth as talent is often brought in for the higher positions, pays nicer than many smaller companies, but still was underpaid the entire time of my employment for the job duties and titles that I had, often a lack of teambuilding in favor of high demand deadlines.

    Advice to Management

Cultivate and respect talent, promote more often from within, teambuilding is a must to get the best from talent and draw in the best talent.

I have been working at PetSmart part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Working with animals
Better knowledge of pets and pet food
    Playing with everyone's dog

    Cons

No oversight from corporate for bad management practices
    No real training
Expected to know everything about all of the animals
Retaliatory hour cutting rather than actual discussion about workplace concerns
Does not allow you to take the 15 minutes breaks promised during interview/hiring process

    Advice to Management

This is mostly for the store I work at, but it would help if you didn't come to work and get drunk. Also schedule some actual training hours rather than just throwing someone on the register and expecting them to know how to run the pet care section after a few weeks as a cashier. Finally, take a look at some courses on how to schedule people for a job because you aren't very good at it.

I worked at PetSmart full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Flexibility with scheduling
    Good discount
    OK management & co-workers
    Working with pets

    Cons

    Lack of communication
    Favoritism
Hard work overlooked while laziness gets appraisal
    Not everyone cares for pets
    Money over customers

    Advice to Management

Retrain all staff members including management, train employees properly, treat everyone the same, communicate with your employees they aren't mind readers, be on the same page if your are management/senior don't have everyone telling employees multiple things.

I worked at PetSmart full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

You get to be around animals. Pet owners share passion for animals. Safety is a priority for animals, guests and employees. Store GM has some latitude in merchandising decisions.

    Cons

Salaries are below retail industry for comparable big box. We deal with live animals for sale and in the salons but there is no added compensation for this responsibility. Company is extremely politically correct and is quick to discipline and terminate for any variance from their interpretation of acceptable language.

    Advice to Management

Your DMs have a very closed network that Phoenix is unaware of or condones.

I worked at PetSmart full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

You can bring your pet to work.

    Cons

No work life balance, leadership is disrespectful and often condecending, there is a lot of job uncertainty

    Advice to Management

Trust between leadership and the employee base below VP is irreconcilably broken. The home office associates are skeptical or suspicious of leadership motivations, the tone of leadership boundaries on authoritarian having decimated the collaboration of days past, the culture of a once great headquarters has eroded with the security of job certainty and the lack of transparency. Associates need to feel like they are part of a team and together great things can be accomplished, but that cannot happen without genuine forward thinking leadership and trust.

I worked at PetSmart full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Working with animals every day

    Cons

No upward mobility. Meaningless, horizontal promotions with no pay increase. All management hired from outside, few, if any, promotions of veterans with experience in the store AND with animals.

Poor scheduling leads to understaffed, overworked team members. Issues between employees were never dealt with by upper management.

The push from district management to sell Puppy Guides extended beyond people that actually worked in the right departments. People in the hotel side had hours cut due to low puppy guide sales despite the fact that they literally never interface with customers beyond handing them their dog.

    Advice to Management

    1. Hire qualified individuals with experience with animals.
    2. Look inside your company for people to promote.
    3. I understand hours are limited per store by corporate, but there needs to be a change in scheduling. One person can't be saddled with the myriad of tasks scheduled in Pet Care and then be reprimanded when they weren't all completed on time.

    I worked at PetSmart part-time

    Pros

Working with dogs in the play rooms

    Cons

Lying to customers, seeing the dogs weren't kept clean during there stay at the hotel

    Advice to Management

Make sure employees get there breaks and get off on time, don't yell at them for not clocking out when no one comes to replace them

I have been working at PetSmart part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Animals are a good bonus and the pay is okay for entry level work. They allow you to move freely around positions at store

    Cons

They track every statistic about you possible, and often berate and embarrass you over things like email capture (the amount of email sign ups for PetPerks.) and puppy guide sales (rip off coupon book)

I have been working at PetSmart full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Animals are great, co-workers become family, benefits, discount, so much to learn!

    Cons

Long hours, no work/life balance, constant changes from corporate for operations (with the drop of a hat)

    Advice to Management

Give employees some time to adjust to everything before throwing more at them. This company has lost a lot of managers these past couple of years because of the amount of change and lack of support.
