I worked at PetSmart full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The people! I made amazing friends that I will absolutely have for life. Also, who doesn't love hanging put with animals.

    Cons

The scheduling is crazy. I would get my schedule for the week Sunday night. So it was very difficult to plan anything. I worked at two locations and they both had the issue.

    Advice to Management

Treat your employees like people and not expendables. Pay better, have schedules set ahead of time.

    I worked at PetSmart full-time

    Pros

Corporate Mission, Vision, Charitable Services, Pets Allowed Onsite, Raw Talent, Freedom of Independence

    Cons

Cultural shift due to privatization, morale, cross-team communications, life balance, information, access and behavioral silos, IT department onboarding and orientation, process, tool and method standardization, mobility, software and equipment planning based on role vs. employee self investment. Gender equality (assignments, workload, roles and responsibilities).

    Advice to Management

Cross-departmental needs assessments - Corporate Office and IT. Rotate Senior Leadership talent into 'roll-up the sleeve activities' and actual work product development to innovate, bridge the gap and experience issues first hand. Management sensitivity training for disabilities and or different work methods/needs. Brainstorm to deal with cultural apathy within and across teams.

I worked at PetSmart part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Learned wonderful things about retail! Was an absolute wealth of knowledge and development into a corporate style workforce. Great team building opportunities, ability to learn responsibility, multi tasking, accountability for ones self, and a deep passion for customer service.

    Cons

Terrible management!! The management games are awful, they rarely promote from within and when they do it is a political game of who's the favorite. The never promote on merit, self improvement, or overall employee worth. Be lazy, have smoke breaks with the boss, party after works hours together and you are guaranteed a promotion to management.

    Advice to Management

Grow and nurture employees that look at thier positions as more than a summer job but REAL careers. Promote from within and train with a fierce attitude of innovation and watch those employees push the company into excellence.

I have been working at PetSmart part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Love my position, and a lot of my co workers.

    Cons

Minimum wage, management is more about bottom line than you or the animals, very little growth opportunities, extremely inconsistent hours, if one or two co workers don't like you and are in good with management you can expect to have your hours cut and a mark on your record.

    Advice to Management

Please don't give an employee 30 hours a week for 3 weeks then, all of a sudden, but then down to under 20 hours a week. You need consistent training and consistent hours. You need to evalute an entire problem, with all prospective parties involved, before settling on the party you 'think' may be responsible.

I have been working at PetSmart part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Willingness to work with hours/school/other jobs
    Experience with animals
    Friendly Environment

    Cons

Glossed over on 90 day reviews, yearlys, and they'd rather hire outside company people for $15, than promote within to $13.

    Advice to Management

Honestly, Management is fine. DM/Regional/Corporate are where a lot of the issues lie.

I have been working at PetSmart part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Customers are typically pleasant to deal with, better than in most other retail. Large corporate structure allows for clearly defined, detailed policies and procedures. Associates allowed discretion to refuse sale of live animal(s) to questionable customers. Live feedings limited to crickets, worms, and fish including sales (ex: small animals are sold ONLY as pets, sale as feeders is prohibited). Some disparity between stores exist when it comes to quality of care provided to live animals intended for sale, though company policy prioritizes proper care be provided to animals displaying signs of illness or injury. This includes veterinary care despite costs making sale of animals unprofitable.

    Cons

Part-time employees are limited to 28 hours per work (13 week average) due to certain benefits required legally to employees working in excess of 28 hours/per week. Most retail and management employee contracts include non-compete clauses- Dog trainers, 10 months; Pet care associates, 6 month (other positions such as groomers also include non-compete clauses in employee contracts). Pet care position the most labor intensive position (retail level) with a high number of responsibilities. Large quantities of animals to care for make attending to each of them extremely challenging regardless of employee abilities. Animals provided by large scale breeding farms prone to overcrowding resulting frequently in animals arriving in poor health whether from mutation, illness, infection, parasite, and/or injury. While not average, and number of are difficult to deal with due to an inability to properly care for an animals- typically due to cheapness, but also from stubbornly held outdated/incorrect knowledge and practices, the reality of small children generally being rough on animals due to a variety of factors including undeveloped fine motor skills.

    Advice to Management

The pet care department requires a minimum of two employees at most times. A single associate should be able to close the department alone if this practice of 2 pet care associates was followed throughout the day.
