I worked at PetSmart full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

You can bring your dog to work.

    Free snacks

    Dog park on site.

    Cons

More than Management is under qualified.

The Main Manager walks around and stares at you when you address him it feels like he doesn't want to talk to you.

They use to care aboit employee morale but no longer do.

Gym and vending machines are way overpriced for an employee benefit.

Only open to suggestions if it greatly benefits their pockets.

Highly understaffed almost all the time during busy season.

    Unrealistic sales incentive goals.

    Advice to Management

Care about your employees more like you did at the begginning of my employment.

Hire actually qualified managment that does their jobs. Except Parnell Parnell was cool and knee his stuff.

    Pros

Fun environment with pets and owners, you build a relationship with repeat customers and their pets. Some managers are good

    Cons

Too corporate, they don't care about their employees. They only care about the dollar signs. You can't run all locations the exact same way

    Cons

Having to deal with sick small animals that die.

    Advice to Management

treat your employees like you care if they quit or not.

I have been working at PetSmart full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Benefits are ok, Pay is good for retail. Associates tend to love their jobs. You get to see pets all day.

    Cons

Corporate communication is "messy". Direction from executive leadership is very inconsistent. There is really no consistent sense of direction. Lack of consistent leadership.

    Advice to Management

Pick a goal and go after it.

I worked at PetSmart part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

They are really good at working with your schedule and that's about the only good thing at this store .

    Cons

Pay is low, and certain positions getting treated a lot harder than the others. There's definitely favoritism and tons of drama which is understandable since a majority of the workers are young. Also if you are in pet care and you are an opener you have to do the most work and a lot of the dirty work and usually get blamed for everything that goes wrong. If your applying or petcare and will have to clean !! And clean an clean and it's very dirty animal habitats and you usually don't have any help and your on a very limited time schedule. Not worth the stress or drama or low pay.

    Advice to Management

Stop picking favorites, and maybe even out the amount of work that employees have to do. Also try and work on the whole pointing fingers and blaming others for there own problems

I have been working at PetSmart part-time

    Pros

    The animals.
Getting to work with people (customers and co-workers).
Flexible Schedule for school and/or other jobs.

    Cons

Store Management is a joke. Shows favoritism. Does not support employees.
    Gossip is rampant.
    Advancement Opportunities

    Advice to Management

Biggest piece of advice is to grow up and/or step-down. Store management is incredibly hard to work for. They are well known for gossiping, showing favoritism, and locking themselves in the office at all times. They are not supportive and do not do what is best for the store or employees. You guys really need to evaluate yourselves and do what is best for us and not yourselves. Managing is your job; so start managing.

I worked at PetSmart full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Plenty of options that smaller companies cannot offer: large scope projects, business trips around the country, collaborate with other large brands and third party agencies, etc.

    Cons

Extreme stress in high-demand work, low job security when some degree of layoffs occur every other year, very little room for growth as talent is often brought in for the higher positions, pays nicer than many smaller companies, but still was underpaid the entire time of my employment for the job duties and titles that I had, often a lack of teambuilding in favor of high demand deadlines.

    Advice to Management

Cultivate and respect talent, promote more often from within, teambuilding is a must to get the best from talent and draw in the best talent.

I have been working at PetSmart part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Working with animals
Better knowledge of pets and pet food
    Playing with everyone's dog

    Cons

No oversight from corporate for bad management practices
    No real training
Expected to know everything about all of the animals
Retaliatory hour cutting rather than actual discussion about workplace concerns
Does not allow you to take the 15 minutes breaks promised during interview/hiring process

    Advice to Management

This is mostly for the store I work at, but it would help if you didn't come to work and get drunk. Also schedule some actual training hours rather than just throwing someone on the register and expecting them to know how to run the pet care section after a few weeks as a cashier. Finally, take a look at some courses on how to schedule people for a job because you aren't very good at it.

    Pros

    Flexibility with scheduling
    Good discount
    OK management & co-workers
    Working with pets

    Cons

    Lack of communication
    Favoritism
Hard work overlooked while laziness gets appraisal

    Money over customers

    Advice to Management

Retrain all staff members including management, train employees properly, treat everyone the same, communicate with your employees they aren't mind readers, be on the same page if your are management/senior don't have everyone telling employees multiple things.
