I have been working at PetSmart full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Get to see animals every day, and get to help animals. The company really cares about store pets, too. Compensation, hours, and benefits are much better than standard retail. I love having work/life balance. As a Store Leader, if you invest time in your support staff, and hire/train appropriately, your life is great!

    Cons

The pricing really is a nightmare. Spend probably 40+ payroll hours per period trying to put up all of the tags, most of which don't incur any increase in sales. Many tasks are time consuming, and don't benefit the stores. At least DMs care what you have to say, and try to motivate/inspire.

    Advice to Management

A lot of payroll is wasted in the stores on trivial tasks. Instead of peeling, covering, and replacing 2k plus tags, why not have them stick to the underside of the shelf? If an item is the same sale price every month, why take down and put up the same price? Spend some time doing what you ask the peons to do!

    Pros

Wonderful hours, coworkers are always working so hard, communication is always on point!

    Cons

Pricing can be a hassle; tags are always subtle and change every month to the same price.

    There is some growth
You learn a lot about animals and fish
    Customers can be cool
    You get "regulars"

    Cons

Your expected to do everyone else's job too.
There are unrealistic time guides( clean 24 tanks and do all nessasary bedding changes within 2.5 hrs)
    Customers are rude or ingreatful
You have possibility to get peed on by dogs

    Advice to Management

Talk to us like people instead of talking to us like we're crap on the bottom of your shoe. Give praise when needed and don't talk crap about the employees behind there backs to others managers

    I worked at PetSmart full-time

    Pros

Love the atmosphere of most out of cubicle experiences. Charities work hard to make the company a better place to work.

    Cons

Communication. I felt discriminated against as a minority and as a woman on my abilities to compete with men of the same education background and ability

I have been working at PetSmart full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I actually really love working for this company. I've working in multiple locations in several states, and what I've learned that can make or break the job is management. I've been part of salons where the management (salon included) has been terrible, -!: I've worked in salons where management was (is) amazing. My advice: if you're good (and passionate) at what you do, but you don't like your environment, change stores and transfer. It varies greatly. The day-to-day stressors are the same (dealing with picky clients or those who don't know what they want), but it makes ALL the difference to work with a team who supports you.

Honestly, being "corporate" isn't that bad...your expectations are laid out for you, and they aren't unmanageable. In private salons, you work longer hours, for less commission, zero PTO, and god forbid you injure a dog on your watch (or even if the pet parent claims you did)--those medical bills come out of your pay. No thanks. I love my PTO, I love my clients, I really love my managers. Finding a good fit at PetSmart is a lot easier than finding a good fit elsewhere, so long as you are both an animal person and a people person.

    Cons

The clients tend to look down on you because you work for a corporation. Can't tell you how many times I've been asked, "So what do you REALLY want to do?" Me: "Excuse me, the most important thing I learned in college, earning a double-major on the Dean's List was do something you love...do you want nail grinding or teeth brushing today?"

    Advice to Management

Listen to your salon employees. They DO care about the business--often times we're just a little disconnected from the store. ;)

  9. "Good company"

I have been working at PetSmart part-time

    Pros

Flexible Schedule, Fun job, animals, good college job, allows paid breaks, good people, good management (most of the time)

    Cons

Sometimes, they hire from outside the company and the managers aren't sure of anything. Also seem to be understaffed all the time.

    Advice to Management

Take time to learn about all your departments and employees. I feel as if one manager knows who I am .

    Pros

Great benefits, concerned with safety of employees as well as animals in the salon, I worked with great people

    Cons

Corporate doesn't understand what it's like to work in the salon, and expect us to do too much in a high-volume salon. We don't have 12 arms...

    Advice to Management

Hire a receptionist in the salon if it's high volume
