    Cons

    I truly enjoy working with animals, and I've worked within a couple of the Petsmart’s locations for four years. As with any work environment the quality of work depends on your co-workers, and varies massively from store to store. Petsmart offers decent employee discounts but poor health benefits. There is a very low employee retention rate. Employee retention is primarily due to poor compensation, and limited ability to progress from within the company. Though retail is a forever changing environment, and many positive changes have been made since the buy-out that took the company private, there have also been negative impacts. True customer care focus was lost with the push on sales, conversion & email capture. Associates now must face writes-ups and termination for underperformance on email capture and puppy guides, ultimately putting a tight strain on a once genially friendly environment. When it comes to scheduling, work hours are continually cut as expectations for employs are increased and job positions are eliminated. Like all retail environments Petsmart is not exempt from its fair share of mean, spiteful, and just plain crazy when it comes to customers, and most are in the form of cat-people and the grooming customers. Company losses due to theft (both internal & external) are often tolerated or overlooked by both management and upper level loss prevention teams. Upper level management also varies by district, and though they do little more than push stores to drive sales, can also make or break a store and its workplace environment. Apart from the vast amount of shocking stories I now have from my years working there, “strictly retail” now best sums up what Petsmart now stands for.

    Advice to Management

    Upper level changes must be made to bring this business back to being both economically successful and a good place to work again.
