    Pros

lots of pto, good coworkers at my location

    Cons

stressful and way too many dogs are expected to be done in a day

    Advice to Management

too many dogs are a safety hazard, and commission tiers being raised are the reason all the petco groomers are quitting.

I have been working at Petco full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

They promote from within and are always ready to promote if you are hard working and don't mind relocating.

Working with animals is great! It's easy to destress when you can pull a conure or ferret out and play with them for a few moments.

    Uniforms and training provided.

Excellent PTO and flexible scheduling. After 90 days, at full time, you get 120 hours PTO to use at your discretion.

    Cons

They ONLY promote from within, unless you are a Store Leader.

It is had to find the time to get your training done.

There is no sick pay separate from your PTO pay.

Average wage is low compared to other companies.

    Advice to Management

Please make everyone's job expectations clear. Some people do more then their job expectations to make up for others short comings.

Use the MyPetcoRecognition app to recognize partners accomplishments.

I worked at Petco full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Commissions, Cute Puppies, Getting to work in an airconditioned inside mini-zoo, Interesting knowledge from training in each department, having favorite repeat customers that tip well

    Cons

Some people have odd/over the top requests for "Princess'" care. Like washing her dog bed. Smelling like wet dog. Getting dog hair splinters...EVERYWHERE. Biters. Customers wanting unreasonable things, like a husky washed, dried, and "shed proof" brushed in 20 minutes. It's just not possible.

    Advice to Management

I hate great store managers/team leads. Grooming salon managers needed some improvement. (2007) One stole thousands of dollars (equipment and clients, under the table sales) and was correctly fired. Another was an irresponsible dangerous (while grooming) drunk, also promptly fired. Not managements fault. They could only work with what they were given.

    I worked at Petco part-time

    Pros

Close team feel, work was simple, taking care of animals, decent hours.

    Cons

Low pay, rude customers, sometimes it can get very boring in the store.

    Advice to Management

Pay should be better for experienced employees and new hires.

I worked at Petco part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Cashier duties are fairly laid back. If you show interest in working in other departments the managers will appreciate it and will train you for it. At this location, employees and managers are productive and friendly.

    Cons

Depending on where you work, some employees (and even managers) do not have a clue what they are doing. Sometimes you are instructed to do a task without ever doing it previously. Always one customer who walks in right at closing time.

    Advice to Management

Stay positive, give clear instructions, prioritize tasks for all employees

I have been working at Petco full-time

    Pros

Every company has its ups and downs; this is particularly typical of retail. That being said, my experience at Petco has been mostly good. I think it all really comes down to whether you are a good cultural fit for your specific department and, in general, where Petco’s headed.

There are managers who are affiliative leaders, and there are some who are democratic leaders. It all depends on who you report to and whether or not his/her leadership style meshes well with your personality, but everyone is very nice.

    Cons

There are a few managers who are micromanagers.

    Advice to Management

    1. Invest in employee happiness. Encourage employees to get to know each other on a social level during work hours.

Ex. DogVacay has "frequent happy hours," Adobe has "speed networking events," etc.

    2. Encourage risk-taking and reward courage.

Ex. "[Adobe] Employees receive patents for their ideas and are awarded bonuses for those creations at an annual banquet."
