I have been working at Petco full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The hours are great, the pay is great. You have a chance to move up in position. Very team work based job.

    Cons

A lot of heavy lifting, dogs don't exactly listen, sometimes a lot of pressure to get dogs washed. You need at least 4 dogs a day.

I worked at Petco part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great coworkers, got to pet lots of dogs

    Cons

corporate doesn't care about workers, only pays lip service to caring about the animals. Started drastically cutting back on hours for all the stores in the district after my first year there.

    Advice to Management

Give stores more hours, hire more employees for better coverage, use more than a skeleton crew for shifts.

I have been working at Petco part-time

    Pros

The pets that come to the store

    Cons

No hours, Morale is low, Management always complains about someone or something

    Advice to Management

Stop talking about employees behind there back and do your job. Stop complaining and help the staff

I worked at Petco full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Bring your pups, wonderful people (for the most part), casual environment

    Cons

No job security, benefits aren't the best, pay is not competitive at all, favoritism in management. Outsourcing of jobs and condescending management.

    Advice to Management

I am glad I left when I did. It feels as if your employees are just a number. Some of the managers (were) amazing - a lot of them left... open your eyes Petco, in order to care for animals, you have to care for the people first.

I have been working at Petco full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Continuing to learn about new products and methods for pet parents and also getting working with fellow animal welfare advocates

    Cons

Disorganization with new roll outs and in training new management and less input on future implementations as time went on

    Advice to Management

Focus on optimizing new tech to stream line in store operations as there are far too many different platforms and programs for one operation. We want to spend more time with our customers but have so little time left after wasting time on the disorganized and disconnected intranet.

I worked at Petco full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great experiences with animals and customers. Had a ton of good memories of happy pet parents. I had fun when I first started.

    Cons

No one in upper management knows what's really going on in stores. How do you hire someone full time, and then after a year, tell them that the original position was already taken?

    Advice to Management

Listen to more than just the Store manager. All associates should have a voice. Majority of their worries are DT's and nothing more.

I worked at Petco full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

If you are fast with a regular/steady clientele , you can make a decent living. 60% commission instead of regular 50% commission.

    Cons

Extra 10% commission is not worth all the extra responsibility, management of employees, paperwork, and dealing with all the angry clients. Gave up being the GSM to focus on grooming and made more money despite the 10% difference. Not worth the headache.

    Advice to Management

Hourly pay in addition to commission. Average hourly commission pay for PTO instead of minimum wage like Petsmart does.

I have been working at Petco full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Employee Discount (20% on most, varied promotional discounts at increased rate). Allowed to bring pets to work (provided they pass an assessment).

    Cons

Layoffs every 11 months (last round was 180 at the start of 2017, previously 50 in 2016). No job security. Numerous jobs being relocated to San Diego. Benefits are absolutely terrible - huge premiums, HRAs rollovers from previous take year take 6 months to actually rollover into the current year. Volunteer activities and groups have been disbanded.

    Advice to Management

Stop reviewing jobs based on paper - actually speak with those doing the job and determine what is really going on. Too often are jobs being "combined" with no regard to the current scope of that position. Excel spreadsheets are great, but building a great company is not just a science - it's also an art.
